After waiting many years, my in-ground G. lateriflora is finally flowering. I had a single flower about 4 years ago and nothing since. Now I have dozens on both of my 12 ft all trees. There are from seed brought in by Dr. Coronel of the Philippines. Paulette Johnson (aka the "other" PJ) fruited them a couple of years ago in pots and was kind enough to share some with me. The shape, color and taste of the fruit is very similar to G. hombroniana.

Flower looks similar to G. prainiana

Fantastic, Warren! Do you know what the fruit of this actual plant looks like? With all the Garcinia confusion and folks wanting to and not wanting to call anything laterifolia, I was wondering if you have a picture of the fruit from which your seeds came.

Harry, look again. This is Garcinia lateriflora, not laterifolia. This has nothing to do with achachairu from Bolivia. This species Warren is talking about is from Phillippines and is correctly named and identified, unlike laterifolia.
BTW, the error you just made is identical to error made by many taxonomists. Achachairu was thought to be Rheedia lateriflora. Later someone misspelled it Rheedia laterifolia and this error continued for long time.

THanks Oscar!!! U helped me finally figure out my confusion all these years...It didn't make sense...Lets have a plant can A. tastyfruit and another called A. tastyfrut, you think anyone will get it mixed up?

maybe these taxonomists get paid to come up with these confusing names, so a nursery can sell you anything by accident and have an excuse...help boost sales! thats all they care about! LOL just kidding of course!!

also, I have tasted seashore mangosteen, one time I found one on the ground at fruit and spice park, it was very nice, just like a mangotseen, just small and more tart...I'd eat a bucket full of them!

Hi Adam, it has nothing to do with a confusing name. This confusion has to do with a simple typo! The very first and only Rheedia species named by Linneaus was Rheedia lateriflora. Linneaus traveled to Jamaica and bought some land there with botanical collections. Much later the German taxonomist and traveler saw achachairu in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and got confused and thought this was also Rheedia lateriflora. After that several botanists made a typo and started calling it mistakenly Rheedia laterifolia. The renowned botanist Vasquez continued with this mistake and called it Rheedia laterifolia in his book. Then Lorenzi made the same boo boo. One of the co authors of that Brazilian Fruits book told me they had a Clusiaceae specialists to check all the garcinia entries in the book for correctness, but somehow they skipped this one and did not check it.
I've spent untold countless hours researching all this confusion and alerting all the authors. Nobody so far has got it right. It's kind of like a comedy of errors.

Congratulations on the multiple blooms Fruitguy, you've got a very interesting collection of garcinias. I wonder if it could be grafted?

If you get a good crop, please add me to the list for a seed or two.

Thanks to all for your kind words of encouragement. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some fruit. Seeds will be made available if (when!) I get fruit. Sorry Harry, no pic of the original fruit from which it came. Seeds were shared by Dr. Coronel when he spoke at a Rare Fruit Conference (at the Fruit/Spice Park) years ago. The only fruit I have seen in person were from Paulette's trees. Red in color and similarly shaped to G. hombroniana.

I now have flowering for the first time on g. Lateriflora. I got the seeds from David Clulow and planted out 5 trees some years ago. Two of those trees are starting to flower and I am wondering if these trees are dioucious. This is an old thread and I am wondering if anyone has anything to add to the very slight information that is available about this fruit and the growing of these trees.
I'm pretty excited about this, something I've been waiting on for a while. Another species, new to me, that I have been caring for for years and finally I might get to try the fruit soon.

I'm wondering if anyone on the forum has fruited this tree. I have 5 trees flowering right now and one has what appears to be female flowers. Looking back at 'Fruit'Guys' post from about five years ago the photo shows a male flower very similar to the male g. Prainiana flower. Here you can see a male flower with its pollen and in a blurry photo, sorrry! The female flower without the pollen. Got my fingers crossed for fruit set here.

My lateriflora has fruited twice now. The first harvest disappointed me as the fruits were too sour to appreciate. Now it has fruited again and the fruits are better. Still a little sour but with a very interesting complex flavor that runs a range of sensations while eating it. It has a little of the apple hint that you get so much with forbesii. Several people have tried it with me and people who are really into strange fruits are quite taken with it. The fruit needs to be ripe. The presentation is terrific.

The one female tree I have sets a fair amount of fruit, maybe there were 30-40 fruits. There has been multiple flowering this season and I saw a few green fruits last week. I’ll post some photos soon. I’m not at the farm right now but will check again later this week.

So we’re getting more fruits from this tree and they’re better every time. Yesterday I shared some with a visiting family with small children. Everyone liked lateriflora. The complexity of the flavor is impressive. In looking over the thread I noticed that someone commented that a previous photo gave the impression of it being ‘seedy’. That’s not really the case. The seeds are similar to mangosteen.

Almost 10 years of posts regarding a plant of mine, G lateriflora which now has about 20 fruit on it. The largest is the size of a walnut. Can anyone give me some guidance on when to harvest, & how to tell when ripe. The Internet has limited info. The tree has been in the ground for 11 years and this is it's first fruiting.

Best if the fruits are as ripe as possible. They will fall off and still not be spoiled in my experience. Sometimes we lightly tug on them to see if they are ready.
My tree has fruits developing now as well.
