I gots me a fuerte
« on: January 22, 2014, 03:04:38 AM »
Home Depot may be the devil. I can't even begin to imagine the money I have spent there. Anyway, I saw an avocado tree with a great trunk and I don't have one. I don't have the room either. So I bought it and potted the sucker. I'm going to leave it there for a few years. I may tear up some more concrete once it outgrows the pot it is in.

I too got a Fuerte some weeks ago, just because I couldn't resist the sale price HD offered. So now the tree has to live in a container too. Just wish they had other tropical fruit trees that cheap.

Be warned...Fuerte is a very vigorous grower. You will have to upgrade to a larger pot in no time, or plant it in the ground. It is a good fruit!

Nice Osito! You won't be disappointed with Fuerte but as Somis said it's a huge tree specially in our climate.

I must say, I'm a little bit jealous, I've heard the 'Fuerte' does great in California, but no so much in South Florida. I've heard great things about the quality of this avocado, enjoy.
'Virtue' should be taught, learned and propagated, in order to save others and oneself.

I have done all of the above (pot now plant later) and Home Depot is indeed the land of temptation. An instrument of the devil. Lowes too. Their fruit trees and muscadine grapes also get me thrusting dollar bills into the devil's fists.

But  it always helps to have fruit bearing trees in reserve. You buy something small and culture and get some fruit.....But either way it is getting closer to its age of fruiting. If you have no more room then eventually you sell it to someone to get him-her started

It is a good variety for a family with a bunch of boys who like to climb trees.

I have a Fuerte and I wish I had known that before I planted it in front of my house next to the driveway.

Fuerte was the flagship avocado before Hass took over the turf.

Rickshaw, after watching your video, I am worried about my Fuerte in its 20G pot. I definitely don't have room for it in my yard if it grows that fast. Thanks for sharing videos and pics.

Fuerte was about as popular as Hass is today. Fuerte means strong. It was named that because it was a very cold tolerant avocado. The nurseryman who found it in his travels, brought it back to California, and named it Fuerte had a nursery in Altadena, California....close to my old stomping grounds.

I picked some more Fuerte avocados today for the Holidays. A fair amount of fruit on the tree this year, but not as much as I have on one of my Hass trees.

I planted a HD Fuerte in the ground next to a Hass - both did well for about a year and then started to lose all their leaves.  I dug up the Fuerte first and it's making a comeback in a 5 GL pot which will be upgraded to a half whiskey barrel sized pot this spring.  I just dug up the Hass and it looks questionable.
I still have no idea why they flourish in pots on my patio, but struggle when planted in my crappy clay filled poor draining backyard soil.  :)

I have a mature Fuerte and it has taken down to 19F with just new tip growth damage. The older they get the hardier they seem to be.

when season/months can you start picking Fuerte? I have  a Hass...I'm looking to extend my season with 3 avocados tops starting with my Hass.
Thinking about joining a Fruitaholics anonymous support group...Fruit addiction has taken over my life!

A local avocado grower told me to pick all remaining Fuerte in December.  I leave some on longer.
I can't remember what month we start getting fruit.

Hi Ed,

It is 30F for Fuerte.  Stewart has a better cold hardiness and excellent taste.

There are some very wrong hardiness limits on that chart who ever put that chart together got some of the varieties wrong. I know Julie Frink and I'm sure she knows the right facts.
