WTB: Jujube scion wood
« on: September 26, 2020, 03:19:51 AM »
I'm looking to buy jujube scion wood in a few months so I just want to weigh my options as soon as possible.

Does anyone have the 'Sandia' variety? I'm also interested in GA866, GI1183, Chico, Li, Shanxi Li, Sihong, Topeka and Dongzao. Any other good variety is on the table too, except Sugarcane and Honey Jar which I already have.

Thanks for the suggestion. You probably didn't notice my location, but I'm in Eastern Europe, so I don't have an option of calling US nurseries unfortunately. I have to rely on forum members here who are willing to sell scion wood and ship overseas. The shipping price of $70+ for international orders that this nursery lists is insanely high.

Hi I tried My looking through my emails , but most were European for Hawthorns Cornelian cherry  I remember you have there.
(persimmon /pawpaw etc. )

Cliff is basically a one or two man Nursery with a large persimmon orchard to take care of.

You got to understand Going through all the Import papers ,
if it people want a few scions here, and there it is worth more of his time.

I do not know this for a fact, for him
but I have dealt with something similar in Life. (a lot of people contacting me for more then it is worth)

Now I suppose if someone were asking for a thousand it would be worth it to go through the paper work,
and the United states Department of Agriculture , and get the scions certified for over sea's , and Europe's Laws

would not want to lose His Nursery License or have it suspended or however that works, but Know He could be fined .
I guess people on Ebay / etsy may not care, but have less to lose ..

I hope you find What you Looking for Just trying to explain the situation .
If your Okay with it seeds may be less of a hassle if you want to go that route to see if you get something good or graft over it,
and email, and ask He can only so No is the worst.
I read something on Here that the laws In the EU changed this year 2020 for importing seeds though.

Sometimes figbid has interesting other plants other than figs , but didn't see any Jujubes as of now.
By the way In North America (and South) We have native JuJube species
(Florida , Ziziphus celata, Florida Jujube and maybe others)
(Texas Nevada NM etc (scrub dry land). ziziphus obtusifolia Texas Buckthorn /lote bush foxes eat these Usda says)
Do not know much how edible they are I forgot some of that information years ago when I looked into it..

This is a Old site I saw a long time ago
Not sure how relevant it is with the new laws, (edit UK site says not shipping after NOV 31 for out of UK)
but the American Site (and Vivaio Noaro in Italy )   listed 2 types you want, but not scion just plants I believe .
maybe the other (edit French ) nurseries (in article) have a better option
(I looked to find some hawthorns/edible dogwoods -- and edited this post instead of rewrote the whole thing)

In order to have a forest garden the more diversely planted, I think that it is important to know the nurseries in the world that can provide rare fruit plants. I give you a list of the main ones I know, focused on Europe and including an American nursery which belongs to the few ones accepting to ship in Europe for retail orders. Of course, this list is not exhaustive. It exists numerous other nurseries, especially in America and in Eastern Europe, which have an outstanding offer of rare fruit plants.
For the French nurseries offering rare fruit plants, see the article

(EDIT I looked through these  I did find what I am looking for,
for you Vivaio Noaro has two jujubes (PM ed you)
(note I looked through them all except French nurseries in article )
(Time might be running out for me to contact these for me as well maybe, but your in the EU I hope they sell seeds -$.)

(what I meant above was to try to grow seed out from Cliff ,( if he sells any)
and see if any new Type comes out Better from the seed if not Graft over )

Hey, thank you for the detailed answer.

Even though the shipping price is not the primary reason I don't consider buying from US nurseries, let me just say that Harvey from figaholics charges $40 for international shipping (still too high imo) which is almost half the price. But it's a free market and anyone has the right to set their own prices, and it is up to me not to buy from them.

Generally, I'd like to avoid buying from nurseries. My country is in Europe, but it is not an EU member and it is, shall we say, significantly less organized than most western countries. That's why I have never had any problems receiving seeds, cuttings and even live plants, without a phyto certificate. People at the border don't even check what's inside the packages. I've bought seeds and cuttings from other forum members here, and I hope to do it again this time.

Unfortunately, seeds are not an option. I only want cuttings for grafting. We too have jujubes here since god knows when, but they are wild ones, although different than the wild ones you have in the US. They probably came as seeds of some cultivated variety from China, at least 150 years ago. Nobody here is even aware that there are large, cultivated jujubes in existence. Those are the ones I'm interested in and I have plenty of rootstock all around me to use.

Thank you for the links to the Italian nursery. I might try buying from them.

That's a pretty good way to look at it .
I've changed kind of from judging people for charging to much to excepting it.
If people are willing to pay that much more power to the people making the money, but
I also feel that limits the poor people is that upsets me as well. --
(I can explain this situation well when in a learning environment ,
that is being charged too much money for some class actually drives the poor people away, Divides people
The students MAY know more then the person teaching the class themselves , and just want to meet like minded people)

(I saw that sort of thing on Meetup Sky high classes when was more interested in meeting the people)

I found this by Hold the computer button
CTRL (and ) f
for a find box typed in Ziziphus

Thank you. In my experience, nurseries that don't list cuttings, usually won't sell them.

No hassle I was looking at the French ones  anyways (other fruit)
Just thought I'd finish the post for other just in case Only took 10 minutes I think .
(I saw what you meant by wanting to buy Scions , but posted anyways)

Other time spend was looking at Aronia hawthown hybrids of each other (I think I remember those sites)

Anyways IF I remember how to translate the page which I will look into later that should help.

Oh, and a Member here has a Link to a Italy forum for fruit.
(I know it already I may beg on there for wine grape seeds)

Let me bump this thread.

I've managed to order most of the varieties that I wanted, and now I'm missing:

Chico
Winter Delight

Does anyone have any of these varieties for sale? I cannot buy from nurseries as they either don't ship outside of the US or require an expensive phyto certificate. It has to be individuals.
