Where Is the Original Haden Tree?
« on: April 16, 2021, 10:59:25 PM »
According to Wikipedia, the original Haden still stands in Coconut Grove. Anyone know specifically where? Thanks!

If you are on Instagram you can reach out to @fishhavefeelings.  He recently went to the original Haden tree and posted a picture of it.

Supposedly on Klebba Lane which is a short block and cul-de-sac but it may be fenced in a yard. This article mentions the street name:

This article has a video of Noris Ledesma with the tree:

Perhaps with this info an expedition would work out?

It’s not fenced. Right next to the street and very obvious being the only mango tree visible on Klebba and has a massive trunk.

From what I've read, the seed was planted in 1902 and first fruited in 1910. So it's either 119 years old or 111 years old, depending on if you believe its age is based on when it was planted vs when it first fruited.

Other than the original tree being from Coconut Grove, no coconut associated with a Haden.  I wouldn't call it a "tropical" flavor either.  I would say a classics mango flavor with a peach/nectarine component.

How about the original Kent, also in Coconut Grove (Miami), or original Keitt (Homestead)?  Are they still standing?

The Kent was, as of around 10 years ago. There’s a bad photo of it in the Wikipedia article I wrote on Kent. It’s on Poinciana ave in Cococnut Grove. Very tall tree.

The Keitt is long gone I believe.

Maybe you had a Glenn? To me Haden was a classic mango flavor, but Glenn had some coconut hints.. not like Coconut Cream, but the subtle hints were there..
