I've been looing for sour star fruit for the last 2 years. It goes perfectly with any kind of vietnamese rolls. All these time I thought the cant' grow it, but according to you, it seems like they don't want to grow them. Thanks for the tips about airlayering, I will remember to do as you instructed

xeno

I am not sure if I understood your question :)
Do you want a branch? Certainly, once my tree is strong and healty, I only had it down to the ground a few months ago

Very nice VyVy, your trees look happy.  Is that an airlayer on your Barbados cherry?

good luck,
-Ethan

Ethan

I want to say no b/c it's embarrasing hihihi, yes it is, I am learing to airlayer, its been 3 weeks, I opened to check yesterday but no root yet, my family said it looks like a vietnamese ham (bo' gio`)

SWRancher

I bought this logan airlayer before I joined this forum. therefore I did not know tropical fruits have varieties, I just bought it b/c it was flowering, But for sure that has changed,  I am not the same any more, This forum has made me to become much more sophisticated when it comes to tropical fruits now. Next time I will have to find out what variety it is before purchasing it

Hi VyVy, welcome! You have 4 sugar apples and no cherimoya? Don't worry. That can be fixed really soon. :) We have lots of good cherimoya around here.

You can also try attending a local CRFG meeting in your area for more in-person interactions if you aren't already. There are chapters in Riverside, San Diego, Orange County, South Bay, West LA, San Gabriel Valley, San Fernando Valley, and I believe Santa Barbara as well.

fyliu

I missed all these posts
What's CRFG?

as for Cherimoya, I was never interested, until very recently I learned of it's usage for grafting atemoya & sugar apple
luckily I threw some seed in the back yard and they are actually growing, I also bought a few last week, but they are too small for their job at this time. Therefore I will sit back and wait until they are old enough for me to experiment grafting techniques, meanwhile I will try to acquire as much knowledge as I can, so when the time is right, I will get my hands on immediately

and thank you for arranging the grafting party this August, I can't wait

Does anyone have Avocado seedlings they can bring. Btw, the cherimoya seedlings are 2 years old. I should have 3-5 spare ones.

nullzero ---I will check with my friends, sometimes they offered avocado seedling to me but I don't like avocado therefore never took it, I will bring it if I find some by the time of the party

dnt72800---thank you for your explaination, I got an idea now

MMMMommy ---I have never grafted, or grown anything either, this will be the first time, it will be fun

nullzero

that's perfect
I have cherimoya seedlings too, but too small for grafting

I will bring 1 sugar apple tree (potted) and perhaps a few scion Australia /Isarael atemoya (not sure which one. I bought them but no fruits yet, It's flowering,  some said Australia, some said Israel. I might be able to get some from my neighbors too, that is if I would  have to bring back for her something, maybe one of your cherimoya rootstock with grafting. Her Atemoya have very nice fruits every year

if someone can show me how to harvest a scion, I will bring them
I also have some sugar apple seeds and will bring them.

I have a few extra cherimoya seedlings that can be used for grafting. Not sure if it would be the best time to graft them.

nullzero

Are your cherimoya seedlings going to be used as root stock or scion?

thanks

VyVy I was hoping you or someone around your area could volunteer your place for this. It's sort of in the middle area not extremely far from everybody. Do you have some in-ground trees that we could add a couple of grafts on?

fyliu

I am brand new to gardening/planting; therefore I havn't had any in ground tree yet, all of mine are recently purchased and are still in pots

Yes that was my intention. Everyone should learn to graft. It's not too difficult after the first couple of tries.

The other thing is if someone has plants, maybe we could try to graft something else onto them.

fyliu

if my sugar apple tree (thai lessard) can be used in any way, I would more than happy to contribute to this grafting party, It's small though, perhaps 1 1/2 year old, not sure if u can use it to graft yet. let me know

fyliu

your post is very informative
Every words in there helps me a lot
I have a very good understanding about grafting after reading it

I think I can do it now :)

thank you again

Best time to graft these are right before dormancy breaks.  I've grafted all sizes.  Pencil sized is probably easiest to work with and cuts the nicest.

ohiojay

thank you for your reply
these terminologies are foreign language to me :)
Would you please explan when is "dormancy break "?

Thanks again

Hello friends

I have never done it before, but so interested in grafting sugar apple and atemoya into cherimoya root stock

My questions are:

1. how big does the root stock have to be ? I did research, it said size of a pencil. But one of an former nursery owner told my friend it has to be as big as a big toe

2. Should I wait until Spring (march - april) to graft ?

3. If anyone as a photo of the scion for sugar apple and/or atemoya, would you please post it up, because I am not sure which part I can use, how long does it need to be, does it have to be fully mature  (as it should be in brown color, not green any more)

Thank you so much for all of your help
any tip is greatly appreciated

thank you Jackfruitwhisperer69 for the warm welcome

and hello everyone

I am very new to growing tropical fruit trees and gardening (started 6 months ago)
So far, I've got a few Sugar apples (trai na or mang cau ta), logan (nhan), lychee (trai vai), guavas (oi xa li), mexican lime (chanh me), calamondin (tac chua), atemoya(mang cau Do thai), june plum (coc' thai')

Since I grew up in a tropical country, they grew in me. I have a very deep passion for tropical fruits. Almost every other year, I went back to my country to eat fruits. I figured it's cheaper to grow them and eat here

There is so much I don't know about them, right now I want to learn grafting sugar apple to a cherimoya tree, since I was told Cherimoya root will do very well in Southern CA. This will be my first project and also that's how I found this forum

VyVy from Southern CA
