Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / ISO mystroxylon aethiopicum
« on: May 10, 2023, 07:45:24 PM »
Also known as kooboo berry. I've only found one seller online, but for some reason this plant doesn't come up as an option, even though it isn't a non-allowed plant, when I attempt to do a small seed permit.

Maybe someone has seeds or plants?

But no luck in finding any sellers

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red quandong experiences?
« on: August 26, 2022, 10:20:04 AM »
I just made a purchase from Wildlands Farm (Hey, @nattyfroootz... I forgot to include my free shirt!  :D )

Anyone have experience with Red Quandong (Santalum acuminatum)? I think it'll do good here in Phoenix, but not sure about extreme sun and heat tolerance. Australian deserts might not compare well to ours. I've got an acacia tree I can put it near and that might give it the host it needs. I only got one baby for now, and I'll probably add a second tree, after a paycheck or two, in case it's not self-fertile.

But beyond that, and a few articles online, I'd love to hear what people's experiences have been?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mystery seedling from tossed seeds
« on: May 29, 2022, 12:13:24 PM »
When i give up on tropical seeds, i have a habit of tossing them in the yard. One last chance on their own. But i end up with mystery seedlings when it works! Not finding a match in my old seed envelopes.

Maybe someone recognizes these?

I'm considering buying one or two of these. I also have some seeds. But I don't know if this is monoecious or dioecious. Strangely enough, I can't find the answer from the articles I see online.

thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Id: Chilean guava, or something else?
« on: March 27, 2022, 07:35:22 PM »
I’ve got a happy little 3yr old plant grown from seed (trade winds). It was labeled chilean guava/ugni molinae. It hasn’t flowered yet. But whenever I look at pics online, the leaves seem different than my plant. Shorter and curled downward on the margins (deflexed). Mine almost looks like some eugenia, but … maybe i’m just impatient to know because I haven’t seen flowers/fruit yet.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB Campomanesia sp.
« on: March 26, 2022, 11:48:54 PM »
There are several campomanesia species I'm interested in. There seem to be a few suited to drier environments and with salt tolerance.

Preferably seedlings, but maybe there's some seeds as well. I've only found Farwell Fruit Farm carrying seeds of one species. But they have a $50 purchase limit, and there's nothing else I want from them at the moment.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sowing Annona Senegalensis?
« on: March 25, 2022, 11:43:48 AM »
Has anyone else had luck sowing annona senegalensis? How did you go about it?

Every year, I buy a few seeds from some source or another, but no luck yet getting any to sprout. I've tried at various temperatures, different soils, and different soil moistures.

12
I'm looking for a young plant or I can settle for seeds. The only place I've found selling this is TopTropicals, and they won't ship it to me in Arizona.

13
I don't have a variety to go by, I'm just trying to find varieties that are extremely dark/black skinned fruits with soft seeds and more sweet than acidic/astringent.

There are ornamental varieties, and ones that are a sharper flavor - I don't want these. I know there is one developed in Spain, but that's not available for purchase as a plant.

Interested in seeds, cuttings or plants.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Most likely Loquat rootstock?
« on: January 31, 2021, 11:50:43 AM »
I bought a Bradenton Loquat in Phoenix, but I don’t know it’s rootstock. I messaged the nursery owner asking, and he only replied “random”.

I’m pretty sure he gets most of his trees from Florida. Maybe there are ‘most common/most likely’ rootstock, or even recognition of the grower, based off the tag. Here’s a pic of some rootstock leaves and the tag;

Citrus General Discussion / Cutting blackened, dead? but has roots
« on: January 30, 2021, 08:31:30 PM »
Someone graciously sent me a citrus cutting. I dipped it in hormone and planted it with a good humid environment. Tried to maintain airflow.

After 3 weeks, i had lots of white fuzzy mold on the stem, and it was a mostly blackened stick, so last week i set it outside in a Phoenix winter as a casualty to learn from. Need room for other experiments.

Today i cut away the cup just to see how bad I’d failed... but found the green end of a root! So i quickly added moisture and brought it back inside in a new pot.

But... does it really stand a chance with the cutting itself looking pretty dead?? I’ve been pretty cruel to it.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / ID seed pod mailed?
« on: January 29, 2021, 05:30:35 PM »
Here's a funny one.. I think I've ordered too many different seeds. I'm starting to lose track. It didn't help that I got something from a Steve in Pennsylvania, I opened the little box to find what looks like a squiggly 3" woody cat turd.  ;D with no document saying what it was. I'm stumped!

Any ideas what I ordered?? I thought maybe Chañar at first, but that doesn't look right.

UPDATE - disregard. I figured it out. Not a seed pod. I'd ordered Ampelocissus Martinii online. Instead of a potted plant, they sent me this. No roots, nothing. just a chunk of wood I have to see if would even root

Tropical Fruit Discussion / best time to train-prune young Tamarind?
« on: January 12, 2021, 08:12:32 PM »
I made a mistake and bought a young sour Tamarind that has a main trunk that separates into two vertical branches going straight up. Basically, like a tuning fork or wishbone. problem is, I now realize as the tree grows, I'll get occluded bark and a weaker tree. So i want to trim one of the forks off, but not sure when the best time is to do so.

It's a young tree. The trunk caliper is about an inch+ thick. So, by doing this I'd be literally removing almost half the tree. Currently, it still has leaves, as I'm in a place where it hasn't quite gotten cold enough for the tree to go dormant.

It seems, with some hunting, I have found no nursery that acknowledges the kei apple they sell is dioecious. Or they’re hiding that fact. They also don’t know (or don’t say) if their trees are male, female or a rare self fertile variety.

I’m wondering why? Is it because all are grown from seed, so no way to know? And... is there anyone who does sell specifically labeled male/female/ grafted/ whatever, so that a person can buy knowledgeably?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB - Spondias tuberosa
« on: December 28, 2020, 01:21:29 PM »
Not sure how long the viability is on this seed,  but I would love to get some seeds of spondias tuberosa / imbu. I know it grows in the Caatinga region of Brazil.

I'm not sure when the fruit for Stamvrug / Transvaal milkplum are in season, but i want several seeds to try. I know they're best sown fresh

thank you!

I made an impulse buy a couple month’s ago: black Sapote Matt Snow.

Just now looking it up and not finding any good info on it. Anyone got details? Its history, care, flavor? (other than that it was maybe grown in Miami by the Rare Fruit club president?)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Good sturdy soil moisture % meter?
« on: December 10, 2020, 12:16:29 PM »
I know it's a bit of a gardening question, but it's for tropical fruit trees.

I'm trying to find a good soil moisture sensor that's longer and sturdier than the cheap small ones I see online. I've got clay soil. Even ammended, I imagine it'll break those things in no time. I found a Reotemp model that looks good, but it requires me to wet soil and calibrate the meter to my 'preference'. I don't want preference comparison. I could be wrong, and different plants have different needs. I want fact: soil moisture percentage.

Maybe it's my ignorance of what's possible or available. but Maybe someone knows a good tool to use?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / low-chill Bartlett-like pear
« on: December 07, 2020, 06:01:00 PM »
I was considering adding a pear tree to my yard. My conundrum is that one of my favorites (of store-bought fruit) is a Bartlett pear. but I'm in Phoenix with 300 - 450 chill hours each year, and 115-degree summers. And I don't care at all for the other pears.

Is there a low-chill pear comparable to Bartlett? I like that soft, gritty sweet taste.

I'm curious to see what people suggest. I've never been into palms, but it's time to mix up what I plant, in limited space. I'm looking for trees that stay under 6 meters / 15 feet.  And something that can tolerate a temperature range of 28 f / -3 c up to 120 f / 49 c.

But I'm not sure what options there are. I've never researched it. I know there's a pygmy date, but I've heard it's also not very tasty. That's all I'm aware of for shorter palms.

I'm sure there are a few that are edible... but I'd like it to be palatable as well!
