i went to a store that sell bonsai and prebonsai  i fond a Kumquat tree not in good shape ...it was in bad soil ( not bonsai ) and water ones or twice a day and it has root rot (i think ) the tree had lots of yellow on the new growth... first thing i did was  clean off the old soil and put in the the same pot.....   with new potting soil  and some bonsai soil....  its from a cutting or air layering by the way the roots are on it..  the one good thing it was cheep less then 20 and no shipping but i dont no what kind of Kumquat it is...

Millet l not just lava rock im using a mix with lava rock compost potting soil and what look like cat litter is a fired clay ...   the  lava rock is to help make the roots split like the superoot pots do ...when the root hit the  lava rock it gets trap in the rock and make it split and help keep the roots fine ...   as for my citrus trees i have are staying in they big pots ....   i will be trying air rotting by key lime next year to do a bonsai with ...the art of bonsai is to make a tree that grows slow and look old ...  its a fine dance between life and death you have to do ....  i will never have all my citrus in bonsai ...   i like them to munch to do that with i have some  fd seedling that i will try it with  but not with all them eather...  that why im looking for some thing to bonsai if i got a Kumquat tree i wood take a cutting to bonsai...
