Mamey Sapote
« on: April 21, 2021, 05:35:05 PM »
Hello everyone! I tasted mamey sapote for the first time in my life a couple of weeks ago and was blown away. I was wondering if there is anyone with experience growing mamey sapote in zone 10B (while keeping it on a smaller-ish size)? Is it possible? There are some nurseries that sell grafted trees but I have read conflicting information on how well it does in my zone. Thanks!

Green sapote has more cold hardiness than Mamey sapote.

Cold hardiness is not an issue in 10b.

I have a mamey from Zills called "pumpkin pie"
.  Supposed to be a dwarf variety that fruits easy

Yeah, cold hardiness is not really an issue over here in LA. I was thinking more along the lines of varieties that don't need high humidity.

I'll look into that variety, thanks.

I have a fruiting one down in San Diego near the coast, I believe it is a "Pantin" variety.
