Help identify my new jaboticaba
« on: September 29, 2020, 04:37:17 PM »
Hello

First time posting. I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than me can help identify my jaboticaba variety.  I picked it up from a local nusery. The tag was labeled jaboticaba only.  I have attached some pictures. Hopefully I can get the leaves looking better. It was in the back corner, and looked pretty neglected. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Although I am no jaboticaba expert, that is a sabara. Takes 8-12 years to fruit from seed, and is the most common. Looks like it has some tip burn on the leaves, but looks healthy.

Thanks for the reply jaboticab45.  I  was hoping I would get lucky and it would be a red hybrid.  Looks like I'll have to be patient for some fruit from this guy.  I may source a red variety to be able to try some fruit sooner.  Glad to hear it looks healthy. The tip burn had me worried.

Looks like sabara and red hybrids are similar and a bit more weepy with slightly larger and paler leaves. They are also more compact and smaller when they begin fruiting.

Sprinkle it with some love (Epsoma HollyTone Fertilizer) around the base of the tree and water in, the tree will respond!

Thanks for the heads up FM.  I'll pick up some of that HollyTone magic.

That tree could be 5+ years old and may fruit sooner then you think.
I put 2 in the ground and they seem really happy. I also recently put a grimal and
restinga in the ground hopefully they respond favorably.
I have fresh red seeds available if you want to grow your own. You should get fruit
in 4-5 years but I think you will also get fruit from the tree you just purchased in the
same time.

Nice looking tree achetadomestica.  I have a spot and may put mine in the ground eventually.  I just have to figure out the irragation.  Reading this forum I learned they like to drink. Nice to hear I may get fruit sooner than I think.  Thanks for the seed offer. I will probably search for a nusery that has trees to get a head start on the fruit production.

There are several sellers on ebay that are offering 1-2 year old reds for
a decent price. I do like the reds better.  Thin skin and they fruit more often.
Usually 4-6 times a year. My sabara only fruits once a year so far.

I think my climate helps my jabs fruit multiple times a year. Sabara would be at least 3 or 4 times for all 3 big ones I have and grimal 2 to 4 times a year. Scarlet and red hybrid just go nuts all the time and its hard to count often re-flowering while fruit are still on. They are very contented trees enjoying good soil and frequent fertilising and watering. Looks like my phitrantha x aureana is going the same way with 3 crops this year so far.

That's awesome MikeT.  I'll give mine plenty of water and fertilizer. Hopefully I will get multiple crops as well.  I will keep an eye out on Ebay for a red.

Timbo i would suggest you feeding them in a foliar manner, especially if grown in pots. It is way harder to overfertilize that way and gets nutrients faster into them.

Good to know William. I plan on planting it next spring. I will look into a good foliar fertilizer until then.
