Calling annona aficionados
« on: December 09, 2016, 08:00:26 PM »
What are the better of the unusual species, has anyone tried hypoglauca, hayesii, amazonica, coriacea or Spraguei? Also top tropicals lists a muricata x glabra hybrid I wondered if anyone is growing. Want to increase my collection of annona.

From what I understand the hybrid is just pond apple. I have heard it called "Pineapple Annona." I have a couple small minor species annonas in pots right now but they are no where close to fruiting. I am always on the lookout for species I haven't hoarded yet as well.

TREESNMORE didn't seem too happy with his purchase.

The only reason I would have a pond apple in my yard would be for a steady supply of seed with the same genetics to use for rootstock testing.

According to our member dreamfrutas, flavor of the Annona hayesii  "is very different and weird, more like a pepper than an Annona!!" see:

Annona amazonica is a huge tree and it is said to be toxic, see:

That just leaves hypoglauca and coriacea, coriacea looks similar to crassiflora. Anyone know a source for seeds of coriacea?

There are two "TT"'s:

Truly Tropical, which I recommend, in Delray Beach;

and

Top Tropicals, seller on the internet, which I have no first-hand experience with.

My Annona coriacea fruited just once, over 20 years ago, and had just two seeds.  It tasted similar to Annona montana, but probably a little better.

We used our teeth to squeeze out the reasonably tasty juice, then we spit out the cottony wads of fiber, which we had made no progress at at chewing up.

Annona Jahnii and annona tomentosa look promising too.
My annona jahnii is doing well and I hope for first flowering soon, also annona tometosa (or maybe it is annona dioica).
I bought seeds of annona jahnii from forum member from Venezuela, but judging by the blog from Australia, there is a source in Australia too. see: http://wildgirl-inthekitchen.blogspot.sk/2012/06/aloo-pie.html

Har I was reading on a site, and while it wasn't Hexalobus Crispiflorus I did see something In Africa about H. monopetalus
Video only 1/2 a Minute, but says it tastes like Guava .
(off subject, but I am Curious  after you see it does it play a bunch of baboa tree video's back to back.
maybe I will watch more of those when I eat something)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThkaAAWM7jQ

Oh I originally read of that Anonoaceae species  on these site 's
looks like some are critically endangered (  Monanthotaxis buchananii  ) , and even one I saw extinct.
https://www.zimbabweflora.co.zw/speciesdata/family.php?family_id=12

Radoslav Any updates on the  annona jahnii did not see anything on a search new.
