2021 mango season (California)

My LZ is sending out flowers now and a stalk has bean size fruits already. Most other mangoes are ready with flower buds also. They all will be cut off. This seems to be a little sooner than the passed years.

I will let them hold fruits in April.

At the beginning, 10 or 15 yrs ago, it was hard as they kept dying on me in the winters. One winter I bought 13 hair dryers and stayed all night to keep then warm.  Now it's easy -- don't know because I'm good at it or global warming and winters were less cold. All are in ground as soon as possible. It's hard to care them in pots. Read Simon's how to grow mangoes in SoCal, from seeds.

LZ and Ukrong Tong grafted on HD rootstock in full bloom. They will be cut off as it's still cold. Only flowers in March or April are bearing fruits.

Hey Sapote,

Nice looking tree. I usually just leave the flowers alone if the tree is large enough to hold fruit. If the first blooms don’t set fruit, then I’ll cut off the dead panicles in order to minimize the spread of fungal spores. I have a small grafted LZ on seedling rootstock that bloomed around October or November and it has thumb sized fruit already.

I usually get frost around this time of year but I’m not going to worry about it. Last year was a horrible year for me in terms of Powdery Mildew so hopefully this year will be better.

Hi Simon,

Thank you for the LZ scions you mailed me some years ago and this is the result. The top branches are LZ and the lower ones are Okrung Tong grafts, on Home Depot  seedling. I don't know about yours but I think the fruits that set in the cold months will mostly aborted later due to failed seed development when fruits are about couple inches long. And yes, LZ always have heavy PM issue during flowering and early fruit setting. Last year it was a very bad year with PM for me too.

It's 2/15/21 and so far my mango trees have almost no PM due to lack of rain and mild winter months. I was planning to cut off all the blooming  flowers at end of Feb to force the new flowers out, but it is risky now as the warmer weather might force the trees to send out new shoots instead of flowers as they did last spring when I cut in late March and the Okrung Tong and Maha didn't send out new flowers. But I also don't want the early fruitlets that formed in the cold month and ended up aborted due to failed seeds. It's a tough call for this year.

Looks like Maha Chanok is going to be the first mango of the year for me. Tree is holding different sized fruitlets while flowering I was afraid of loosing fruitlets when temp was 31F a few weeks ago.

While I was in Ventura for work I happened upon a tree that looked familiar and thought it was an avocado but it was actually a super big and healthy mango! Took a photo. Maybe the owner is on here. Impressive.

When do the mango Ripen?
Taste and productivity?

Lastly...CAN I HAVE BUD WOOD?

Forgive me for I have sinned. It was so random. I was dropping off some cameras at a friend's place and my Google Maps took me a few block off track. While I was re-navigating to the correct address I noticed the tree. Total serendipity.
