Hello folks, just came back from Brazil and tasted some awesome palmer mangos while visiting. Super juicy, sweet and tasty... it has a classic mango taste with a tiny hint of pineapple.
Does anyone recommend to plant a palmer mango tree in South Florida?
What are the pros and cons to this tree?
Has anyone ever had experience with it?

Of all the commercially grown mango varieties in my district Palmer and Brooks fetch the lowest prices and are not held in high regard. Keitt also commands low prices but certainly not as low as Palmer. Why is Brooks not very sought after? How is its quality compared to Kent?

One of the first mango trees I purchased was a palmer that had was labeled as dot. I think palmer is, relatively speaking, a terrible tasting mango. I would recommend that you validate that what you ate was palmer and eat a Florida grown palmer before you plant one.

I do agree, eat a Florida Palmer and if you like it grow it for you, and people who share your taste in mango.

Dont waste your time. Its pretty bad and has disease issues (at least grown in Florida).

My dear 86-year-old mother-in-law, bless her heart, thought she was doing me a favor by giving me a Tommy Atkins mango recently that came from the supermarket. I think it was grown in Ecuador? It was probably the worst mango I've ever tasted. There was just a hint of mango flavor, and it wasn't very sweet. I can see why lots of people say they hate mangos if store-bought TA's are all they've ever tasted!

Now, disease prone, that is not relative. If it is a sickly tree in FLorida, forget about it and try something else that taste like it and does well in Florida.
Taste though still remains relative. I was going to completely topwork a Tommy Atkins in my yard until I was told in no uncertain terms that it was the favorite of my mango by at least two people I care a lot about and want to keep supplied with mangoes. They have tasted other mangoes from my yard and from Alex's when I buy some mango including some described here as much better fruit. Just this past season they tried Sweet Tart, PPK, Lemon Zest, Carrie, Beverly, Choc Anon ... and many more. They still want that Tommy.
I had started the topwork and two thirds of the canopy had been replaced before this revelation. I had actually chopped down the last third, now I intend to keep that last third in Tommy (at least most of the regrowth) for those who love it. The tree is vigorous, had no disease issues for me, produces heavily, and makes large tasty fruits. It is however still a Tommy Mango and the verdict from us "mango snubs" is that it is inferior. Well, by jove, I am keeping that "inferior" third of a tree.

It’s outclassed by most other varieties to me.
It was also highly prone to bacterial black spot and most of the fruit was rotting every year, so we top-worked it.

The question regarding why I consider Brooks poor is multi-faceted. Low commercial value in spite of it being very late in the season, low flesh yield, a disagreeable taint optimistically referred to as slight turpentine by some, lack of colour and being outshone by all its rivals is a good place to start. Palmer and Brooks are known as Floridian mangoes and may not be the best ambassadors for the state.
