TnTRobbie's 2012 mango season results :)
« on: August 07, 2012, 11:48:17 AM »
Hello all. I just felt like sharing the spoils of my 2012 mango season.
Sadly mango season has ended since mid-July for me. But considering the quality of this year fruit, I can't wait for next year.
I hope next winter is not as windy as this years.
97% came from my two 6yr old Julie and NDM.
I was fortunate to get a taste of some of the recent additions I purchased.

Initial harvest: My Julies rippened first. Quality is just like Trinidad's....exce!!ent.

Peak of Harvest: NDMs start rolling in.

My first Dot mango. 7gal from Bender's Grove (BG). Could not allow to tree ripen due to a upcomming Trinidad trip,
but picked when full and it took a week to ripen. Exterior had an immensely sweet aroma. Sadly, in excitement I forgot to weight and capture innards pic.
It was excellent though. A keeper :)

Okrung (smallest). Julie, NDM. Bought the 7gal (soon to pot up 15 gal) tree from BG. Enjoyed 3 mangoes from it. It was very nice- though I expected it to be much sweeter. Fiber towards the seed, but looking foward to next yrs harvest.

NDM. Biggest one at that time when I was weighing. When they are too ripe, I can only enjoy two in one sitting. But when they are green ripe...I can't stop. Could be a texture/flesh firmness thing. I hope I like Carrie.

NDMs with lovely blush.

Pickering (7gal from Elsy and Jeff a.k.a. Cookie Monster). The best of my new additions. Colour, size (fruit and tree), excellent flavour.

Julie. Looks small compared to the last 3 mangoes lol. But they were numerous and excellent this year. Fruit size varied with 10% being in the small range.

Pickering, NDM, Julie:

Dot: This picture was taken Jan 14 2012. Flowered well before my other mango trees.

May 8th: After harvesting the lone Dot, I pugged it to 14" and is on it's 2nd growth flush.

Okrung: Mid Feb.

Late March

Late April

I must say this tree seems to be difficult to grow- relatively. It would flush nicely and profusely, but some new leaves would get spotted but still functional. And some limbs would just die back. I'm still monitoring it.

Trinidad "Starch" mango. Yep. Anthracnose problem when ripe and even more damage with mango sap on skin, but man....it sure is sweet.
I wonder how it stacks up to Okrung in terms of sweetness. I know murahilin has some ties to Trinidad and has mabye tasted Okrung.

Dense yellow innards with fiber.

Tree rippened Julie in Trinidad. Consumed immediately after this pic :) .

Unknown Asian mango from a friend in Cooper City. Huge tree, came with house.
Green when ripe, nice flavour and sweet with fiber closer to thin seed.

What the hell is with all of the "reserved" posts?

Also, next year, let those NDM get more color to them unless you are eating them green.

eek...that was more work than expected. lol.
I appologize for the number of pics. Hope I didn't break any laws.
As I've learn't from the "other" forum, vendors on Craig and Ebay use other ppl's photos claiming it's the source of their trees. Thus the watermark.

@bsbullie
Any more color, and the squirrels get em in my neck of the woods :) . But I'm working on that for next season.
I much prefer NDM that are early on in the rippening process, so I  pick them when they give a little when lightly squeezed on the tree.
Same too my Julies and they ripen nicely. No flesh damage, off flavors or taste.

@ Tropicalgrower89
Thank you :). +6 post so I'm up to 30 now. lol.

Nice ripe blush on your NDMs. Looks like you had a good mango year esp from your older trees. Now your new trees have to play catch up. Good idea to expand your varieties.

A very organized man you are, Robbie.  Love the time stamp series.
How did you get the super dwarf Julie to grow that big?  I think you may have mentioned its age on GW once but how old is the tree again?

@ Zands
Thank you zands :) . As we speak, Jeff has a big Rosigold in holding for me :D . hahaha. May put my pugged Lancetilla in a barrel container and sub in the Rosigold. Pot culture baby :) .

@ Tim
Thanks Tim :) . They're like my children. Every milestone (growth flush, flowering, mature fruiting etc) I take good pics of em. The Julie pictured will be 6 yr in ground this October. Bought it as a 3 gal plant. The first 4 yrs I feed it Peter's Professional (bought over now) 24-8-16 as per the vendor's recommendation. The 5th year I stopped Peter's Pro and did Fe soil drenches and foliar sprays with 2-10-10 fert applications, as I became aware of the GW forum and Fairchild. But the real difference was last year as it coincided with the Fe and foilar sprays. There used to be a towering 30ft tree with a broad canopy at the side of this Julie, and within two weeks after chopping it down myself, this Julie just took off. So I would say the increased direct sunlight did the trick. One more time stamped pic :) .
September 2011: Canopy removal effect. Flushes.

I liked the pics but found the watermark to be very distracting...since your photo subject is usually in the middle of the frame with the watermark. Maybe move the watermark down a bit or make it smaller? Just my humble 2 cents.
They're like the Varmint-Cong...

that unknown Asian mango looks like an Ivory.... one of the best mangos I've tried, out of 70 varieties, this year. BTW, great looking backyard and mango trees.

Don't be like me. My backyard is wayyy to small  ;) ;D .

@JF
I hate to admit this, but when I tasted that first unknown mango I got, my first thought was, "WOW...this killed my NDM and Okrung this season."
It was really good. But subsequent of the unknowns tasted after that weren't consistent. I did a search for Ivory mango and came across Harry's thread on it on GW
http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/tropicalfruits/msg072200379013.html
They do look similair.

@ MangoFang
I hope so Fang. Looking foward to Carrie, Rosigold, Mallika and hopefully Maha next season. Cushman, Maha and Dot was pugged, but of them all the Maha has taken off the most.

I have trued Ivory grown here in SFla a few times...nothing special.  The look also bears a great resemblance to Okrung Tong/Okrung Pi Kun Tong (some feel these are one in the same).
