Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passionfruit Protection
« on: October 27, 2021, 03:50:32 PM »
Hello everyone!

Up here in 9b, it’s starting to get chilly again, with some temps getting into the 40’s. So far, my 15-foot or so passionfruit vine seems to be doing OK, it even has a couple flower buds on it and pulled through a wind/rain storm unscathed. However, I was just wondering if I should do anything to protect it during the coming winter, when temps can get into the 30’s at night?

Thanks!
Sorry I was gone for a while.

Okay, sorry. Just wanted to see if I could start them now, but apparently not.

I'm in California. I'm wondering if I could plant sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) as a winter crop and have them overwinter?

I'm in West MP, near El Camino and Downtown, so I'd say I'm about halfway.

UPDATE: My CORG (Cherry of the Rio Grande, E. involucrata aggregata) arrived from 9waters on Etsy a month or so back, and I shade-acclimated it as the instructions told me to. Today, I repotted it and put it outside in a sunny spot. Any tips?

Also, would pitangatuba be doable? I've been getting mixed results in my research.

Well, I know I shouldn't do rainforest plums (E. candolleana) or cloves (S. aromaticum). Any other recommendations of what I should avoid/try (jaboticaba perhaps?)? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Myrtaceae

I have recently stumbled upon and taken somewhat of an interest in fruit trees in family Myrtaceae; specifically Eugenia, Plinia, and Syzygium. I looked at Grow All The Fruits' video on tropical fruit in the Bay Area, and was just wondering about ppl's experience w/ these, and if they are actually growable and Joe didn't just get lucky?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: When to put passionfruit outside

Okay. I am acclimating it by moving it outside during the day, and inside at night. I plan to do this for two weeks, and after that I plan to leave it outside for one straight week, including nights. If it does well, I will leave it outside. If not, I will repeat the acclimation step. Does this sound like a good plan?

To me, sub/tropical/ultra is like this
Subtropical, anything that can take some frost 25-28 cherimoya atemoya passion fruit mango avocado sapodilla guava cattleyanum guava most eugenias and plinia etc.
Tropical, anything that struggles below freezing ie soursop, jak fruit, mamey, miracle fruit, milimbi, abiu
Ultra tropical anything that just goes bleh below 45 usually
Durian breadfruit salak mangosteen marang etc.

So basically

9b/10a+

10b+

and 11+?

Hi. This is just a proposition. Ignore it if you want.

Anyway, I was thinking of adding these categories to the forum:
-Ultra-tropical (durian, mangosteen, etc.)
-Mango Corner (Mango questions/comments? Take them here. I notice that there is a lot of mango-related discussion going on on the forum.)
-Zone-pushing (People like me, in zones <10a, who are attempting to grow tropicals at home.)
-Tour (Show us around your garden!)

Just a suggestion.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to put passionfruit outside
« on: March 23, 2021, 10:39:11 AM »
I have a passionfruit vine inside that has grown so large that I don’t think I have any more space for it. Since it is now spring, my intentions have been to move it outside, although I have still been getting some nighttime lows in the 40s F for some reason. Would it still be OK to put it outside? I’ve set aside a spot in my garden for it, a sunny spot between a wall and a fence. I’ve heard that proximity to structures keep temps from falling too low. Any advice appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / An experiment
« on: February 02, 2021, 02:34:04 PM »
I'm planning on doing a little experiment this coming spring. I'm going to place several tropical edibles outside throughout the garden's various micro-climates, and see how they fare, with the end goal of getting at least one of them to bear ripe fruit. The two "test subjects" that I have currently obtained (Neither are outside yet, I'm waiting for spring to aid acclimation) are a "Purple Possum" passionfruit vine and an unknown variety of cherimoya. Also thinking of trying avocado, starfruit, taro, and white sapote.

I was just checking to see if any of those are bad options for zone 9b, or if anyone wants to recommend anything else.

Thank you!

For me, it was my navel oranges. I know, not much, but still.

Wow. Good job to her. I'm (sometime in my teenage years which I will not disclose for privacy reasons), and the best I could have drawn is a stick figure with some ovals in the general vicinity...I suck at art lol.

Hi all
Why you don't think that Puerto Rico could be a better
choice?

I would, if it weren’t for those (dang) hurricanes...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Just out of curiosity

Hi everyone!

I was wondering what it might cost to buy and maintain a tropical farm in Hawai'i? I saw some people doing them on YouTube, and my curiosity was piqued. I am extremely unlikely to buy one anytime soon, and I'm just curious.

Thank you!
