Can you find the graft on my mango tree?
« on: June 09, 2012, 05:17:52 PM »
Hello mango maniacs.  So my dying tree finally has some new growth!  I just don't know if it's above or below the greft because I can't find the graft.  Maybe you mango pros can find it.  I'm thinking it'a close to the bottom where is kinda angles?  Here are the pictures.

Yes, Nancy is correct.  That is the graft union.  Would have been easiest to say the graft is at the "elbow:  :)

Cool! Yay so happy that I have some growth above the graft. I really thought that this tree wasn't going to make it but looks like it might now! Would you pros recommend that I cut off the dead wood at the top? Also I went ahead and stuck this baby outside too. It's been inside since I showed you guys the first pictures of it dying.

Is it just that one shoot or are there more ?  Since I can't see the tree as a whole, it is difficult to judge where the new shoot is in relationship to the top.  You will definitely want to cut the "bad wood" off and it will actually help the tree push new shoots.  As to where, maybe a foot or so above the new shoot pictures (and you could trim it further once you see if other new shoot emerge).

As to bringing it outside, if all it has is that one shoot you may be ok with putting it in a good deal of sun.

Rob you're right! Doh  ???...that would have been too easy,lol... ;D

Nurse, I agree with Rob...just make sure you don't take too much off until you're sure its dead. You might accidentally cut live wood and lose some potential new growths...althugh that tree appears to have a very high graft, putting hurt it to "pug" it a little IMHO.. Maybe take a couple of inches off at a time till you see live wood then wait and see if new growth appear and you can always cut more later. Good luck!

that graft is not high, looks to be only 6 inches or so of rootstock.
