ma-prang flowers
« on: January 13, 2015, 06:46:16 AM »
Some weeks ago i bought a ma-prang wan tree. It was hard to find because all sellers told me maprang won't fruit in BKK and tried to sell me a mahyong-chid instead.

Today it had it's first flowers.  ;D

The tree is about a metre tall, is this normal or am i just lucky? It is around 20 celcius at night since a few days which is very cold for us. The tree gets sun untill 1 pm.

Mine is doing the same right now, so I assume this is normal for grafted trees.

It is unusual for 1m seedlings to flower as over 2m and 6 years old would be more typical.Wan taste better to most western people than mayon chid which has more zing. They are classes like freestone and clingstone in stone fruit rather than varieties themselves.

I don't know if it's grafted, it was in a 1 litre growbag and a big tree for that mini bag.

Now i also need mahyong chid, i like zing and they are more expensive fruit. Thai like them more then ma-prang. I guess another cocktailtree is coming  :P

I 'm also trying approach grafting mango onto maprang.

It only has 1 small flower yet but more cold is coming and it has many more buds.

Mine is starting to push a bunch of flowers too. Mine flowers every year. Still have only had one solitary fruit from the tree though. Not getting my hopes up too much for fruit, but this year is the largest and healthiest the tree has been. Probably about 6' now and very nicely branched. From what I am told, it is very common for them to flower for a few years before setting fruit. I have a mayong chid and Kai. The kai is still small though. It has never done all that well since planting but seems to have finally picked up on he growth a bit this year.

Mine from seed planted in 2006 started flowering last year in January and again this year , doesn't look like I'll have fruit this season , crossing my fingers anyway....

My grafted maprang trees flowered once or twice before they actually set fruit. But i have a seedling tree that is huge, 15+ years old, and has never flowered. I probably should remove it, but don't because it's a beautiful tree, especially when it first flushes out purple flushes.
