I missed opportunity to taste both. Interested in hearing from others :)
-
Keep researching this. I'm in the same boat as you. I haven't tasted either one. Didn't Har say he considers them unrelated? What does Rob say, or Alex? (I've always thought highly of Pickering for its coconut flavor.)
-
I prefer the taste of E-4
-
I prefer the taste of E-4
I have heard that E-4 has a longer flavor window then M4. I hope M4 is not difficult to determine when to pick for Peak flavor as others have said about peach cobbler.

Any of the "green skinned mangoes" can be tricky and take practice till you lear tge right harvest time. If grown near the ciast, some will show a color change but inland, other than a slight lightening of the green coloration, there is no obvious visual mechanism.

Have not tried M4 but E4 is the best “performance” mango I’ve ever had.
It’s TRULY deserving of the name “pina colada” because it tastes like a very sweet pina colada when soft. It’s more Sweet pineapple tasting when barely soft and very coconut and pineapple when a bit softer to touch. Delicious, phenomenal, spectacular mango with a real coco flavor, not that artificial coco flavor
Like “coconut cream “ has.

Vote up for sugar loaf, it is the bomb!
-
I have also not had M-4.....but E-4 is absolutely ridiculous. Best mango on my property and the only one that I have multiple trees planted out. And its out of the question to graft anything else onto them

E-4 is rocking the forum and rocking the mango-tasting videos. Even though I consider Pickering to be THE MOST FOOLPROOF mango tree, I'm starting to think I should throw caution to the wind and plant E-4 instead when I get a new house.

Pickering was a Rockstar this year....it always produces, and its a clean, small tree... But this year the flavor (at least on my tree) was outrageous. Not E-4 outrageous, but certainly a must have for anybody planting at least a few mango trees IMO
-
Oh man, I know what you mean! Had some from my old house. Excellent. I won't have room for more than one coco-mango.
-
E4 Sugar loaf is just like a pina colada taste, get a tree now and plant it later, since it is a slow grower.

I beg to differ. Both of mine have been vigorous growers thus far. Seems like they are always flushing.
-
Oh okay, good to know. I have heard otherwise, got one in a pot, still small and growing.
-
I am disappointed that no one is crowing about M4 we've had one mention and it's mostly crickets chirping. I was looking for a little confirmation because I just planted a 3-gallon M-4 tree. Because of limited space i may replace it with a 7 or 15 gallon Phoenix.
My E-4

Ok, Bo, here you go. Have you heard of YouTube? M-4 reviews:

You might be wise to keep your tree (unless Rob says Phoenix is way better).

Gonna finally get to taste some M4's in a day or so and then I'll let you know how I feel about them...
Suagrloaf was fantastic and I had an unripe one but that was the only one I tried so far.
Phoenix was amazing had a bunch so far.
M4 is on the platter for tomorrow and the next day.

Sounds good but let us know which one your copilot prefers :)

Har says M4 it is supremely delicious, but the tree could be an alternate bearer though.

Somebody really, REALLY likes Phoenix. Chris does, too.

I was hoping that Beth would have been more descriptive. I feel that she did a much better job describing Carla in a different video. I would like to know if Phoenix has any acidulousness to it? I would like to know in what way is it comparable to Dot.
-
Anybody selling E-4 bud wood or trees that can be shipped to Socal?
Thanks,
Jerome

And the winner is...Piña Colada!

Pina colada! Come on that's too syrupy I'll take Coconut Cream over that.
-
It’s a shame so many of you haven’t had M-4. It’s a special mango.

Do you like it better than E-4?

I like them about the same honestly. They both have similar (but not identical) flavor profiles. M-4 has the benefit of being very late season, but Sugarloaf might be more disease resistant.
M-4 is an impressive producer by the way.

You happy, bovine?
-
I took this photo back in May. This particular tree still has plenty of fruit on it, as do several other M-4s:

Pina colada!!! No I'm not happy mango seasons is over way too early! I know Tropical Acres Farms provides consultations but I need counseling :(

You weren't paying attention. That was only Satya's favorite.

You are correct sir! My ADD kicked in again, this is exactly how I ended up backing over my grandfather's mailbox ;D LOL

Is your M4 an alternate year fruit bearer? Your tree is loaded, nice!
-
...even if m4 is alternate bearing, I could deal with that.
Too soon to tell with grafted trees in different regions and growing conditions.
Going to baby mine and treat her nice.
Found some local Keitts today. If they are even decent, going back tomorrow.
-
Got some from Publix the other day and it was pretty good.

I know of someone with a M4 in Broward and it fruited last year and this year.

Not so far. We have several M-4 trees that have had nice crops in consecutive seasons.
-
Is E4 more forgiving in when to know when to pick? Does it have a longer flavor window? Is M4 like a Mallika in that you pick it green and let it ripen at room temperture for a 7 to 10 days? Does it turn different shades of green as a indicator?

Hmmmmm! Late season or longer peak flavor. M-4 or E-4 2020 Coconut King that is the Question???

EZ, get both!

EZ, get both!
If you have the space, or graft one onto the other.

That seems to be correct. (Did you ask Alex when you were at his place?)
-
No we mostly discussed pruning. With Malika I wait for the first sign of yellowing but I don't know if that is the case with M-4
