Couple of unrelated questions about problems.

These little white beetles have devastating my plum tree leaves and now starting on lychee, acerola, loquat trees.  I have killed well above 100 of them on just on one small plum tree.  They are the size of a large rice grain, sometimes larger, and give a cracking noise when crushed.  Any advice for keeping them away ?

Another question is about an atemoya tree that i planted in ground two months ago.  It ges full sun and plenty of water with the daily showers.  I fertilized using regular fruit fertilizer a month ago and also added some ironite.  But leaves do not look healthy.  Any advice would be much appreciated.

It does have one marble size fruit developing, this after me playing a matchmaker using a paintbrush for days and attempting on few dozen flowers.

If atemoya season is about now, how come my tree has flowers and no fruit ?
If flowers and fruit will not survive winder months, should I remove them from the tree as they come out ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: How do nurseries do it?

How do small nurseries stay in business ?  Economics do not seem to work.  To have say 350k in annual revenue, one must sell 10,000 trees a year in 3gal, that seems a stretch for a small nursery, though reasonable for big ones.  Besides, after cost of material and labor, that may leave no profit.
We certainly don't do it to get rich.

Thanks BENDERSGROVE.  As a hobby, it is definitely better than many others out there.

My excuse of a yard is overflowing and i need space desperately.

Have half dozen mango and avocado seedlings each if anybody is interested in grafting.
Plus two seedlings of (i think) mamey sapote, or something that looked and tasted very similar, fruit bought at Boys Market
Few small Conadria fig trees, rooted from cuttings
Kumquat seedlings
Couple of small black mulberry trees, rooted from cuttings
Two longan seedlings
One loquat seedling
Goji berry rooted from cuttings
One pomegranate in 3gal fro air layer
Many dragon fruit cuttings rooted, natural mystic and some other varieties

Most are in half gallon containers, but some are in cups and others are in bigger containers.

Also, due to shortage of space, i decided to say good buy to my strawberry tree in a 24 inch container, about 9-10 foot high, 2-2.5 inch trunk, plenty of berries on it.  Though i definitely need the container back.

What is the price ?  You offer.  Cheap if you take few, very cheap if you take many.

Lastly, sorry - no shipping please, it is just not worth the time it takes.  I am in west Boca, so i guess only for locals.

Please let me know if you are interested by sending a PM.

Thanks again folks, I will bag the fruit and leave it for now.  Will plan Red Lady next time.

Oh scrap, I was hoping it would not be maggots - nutritious but not appetizing.  Yes, I see wasp like bugs flying around.  Should I cut it open and see at this stage or wait a bit ?  The fruits are the size of a lemon at this point.

If it is really fruit fly, is this already an infestation or is there any chance that other fruits will be fine ?
buddyguygreen, if your experience that it can clear up eventually if it is not fruit fly ?

Sap comes right out of the fruit.  I put a little squeeze on it and more oozed out.  There does not seem to be visible bug damage to the fruit, unless some tiny bug makes tiny holes and enters the fruit.  I guess it is a wait and see for now.

Papaya is supposed to be TR Hovey, however the two of them I ordered online have very different flowers and color of the plant itself, so there is a good chance one of them is not TR Hovey.  This papaya has some red/purple coloring on the tree and stems and large flowers, the other one is all green and small flowers, both seem to be female.

This is a puzzle to me but hope more experienced people have an advice.  What is this white stuff on small papaya fruit ?  It is watery that becomes gel like.  Thanks in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Potting soil mistake
« on: July 29, 2014, 09:08:54 PM »
Thank you folks, this gives me courage to swap out the soil by moving a smaller size root ball.  Will keep fig as is, it seems not to mind tight soil.

One other idea comes to mind - may be replace soil in quarter sectors, e.g remove 45deg entirely vertically, including smaller roots in that section and replace with better potting soil.  Repeat in a month with the next section.  After 4 cycles it should be all fresh potting soil.  Anybody has done this ?  Better or worse ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Potting soil mistake
« on: July 28, 2014, 10:45:11 PM »
I made a beginner's mistake by using garden soil in some of my containers.  The soil is now packed, containers are heavy like rock, drainage is poor, and plants are just surviving but not thriving.  The question is: what is the best way to replace the soil in containers without having to up the size ?  I made this mistake on my biggest containers and have no option to up the size.

One way i thought about is to basically prune roots by moving a small portion of the root system to another container of the same size but with better potting mix.  For example move only 3 gal root system out of the 15 gal container.  Would plants survive such cut back to the roots ?

Few mango trees, one longan, one jackfruit, fig, loquat are in such packed containers unfortunately.

Any advice ?

My very first DF harvest from a cutting planted a year ago.  This is Natural Mystic and has been very easy to grow.  Mild but pleasant taste and smell.  Much better than one bought in the store for $5/lb.

I was able to find some mangosteen near me...first time trying and it was really good...I'm sure it tastes better on it's home turf...they were only about $5 for a pack of six

Which store sells mangosteen, if you do not mind me asking ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Improving fruit set on Miracle Fruit
« on: July 15, 2014, 12:52:21 PM »
First, thanks to Slopfog for raising this question because I deal with exactly the same problem and was also wondering about it.

Having read this, I mixed vinegar with water about 25-75% and watered the Miracle Fruit tree with it.  Hope this helps lower PH and makes the tree happy enough to fruit from the flowers.

Probably not the original intention of the question but still: I really really really (3 times) want to have pluot, aprium, plumcot, nectarine trees but can not in South Florida.  Can I ?

Thanks bsbullie, i picked up that wax jambu at Excalibur, not sure what variety it was though.  I will try Kent again in August, thanks for the advice !

Canesgirl, the black sapote was picked up at Truly Tropical few weeks ago.  it may be off season now, though experts on this forum will know better than me if any variety is still in season.

Both Truly Tropical and Excalibur sell tropical fruits in season, both are great.  Try google "excalibur nursery" and "truly tropical mango" to get their addresses.  Both are in Palm Beach County.  truly tropical has a blog - you will find using google - that usually shows what fruit is available that week.

Other than that, Boys Market in Delray Beach sells tropical fruit usually, though i have never seen black sapote there.

What do  you do with the trees when you pull them out ?
Wait, I do not think I want to know... lalalala

Guava seems to have disappointed quite a few in Florida.  I have two, one in container doing well so far, another in ground is sickly.  The problem is, when some of my trees do not do well, I tend to blame myself for not doing something, and not able pull the plug on them.  Recently I pulled a plug on one hibiscus bush that did not do well at all, so it took me couple of years to make that decision.  This discussion gives me the courage, and thank you for that.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tasted few new fruits recently

I fully recognize that individual tastes differ, and that the same fruit/variety can have a very large spectrum of quality depending on soil, climate, and even random chance.  Plus I am not a professional taster by any means.  So this nothing but my personal assessment of few new ones I tasted over the last few weeks.

Just to to give you a sense of scale - anything below 7 I will still eat but will not buy when much better options are available to buy.

Carrie mango - loved its sweetness and pine tone, 10 out of 10.  I just could not stop eating.
Bombay mango - good quality, not great, 7 out of 10
Kent mango - good quality, not special, 6 out of 10
Haden mango - ok at best, 4 out of 10
Tofu(?), store bought mango - very nice overall, reminded me of Ataulfo sold by Costco (may be the same), 10 out of 10
Wax jambu - ok at best, not sure what else to say, 4 out of 10
Jaboticaba black - good, exotic, but not amazing, 7 out of 10.  Frankly, expected more, Muscadine grape beats Jabo in my book, but will give it another chance.
Longan, store bought - excellent juicy taste, 10 out of 10.  I can see how longan can be addictive.
Lychee, store bought - excellent juicy taste, 10 out of 10.  Also addictive.
Rambutan, store bought - excellent taste, but seed skin was sticking to the fruit flesh and made it difficult to eat; inferior to Lychee and Longan.  8 out of 10.
Sapodilla, one what looked like Alano, another unknown much bigger and round - both excellent, 10 out of 10.  Eats like a sugary dessert.
Black Sapote - pleasant surprise, 8 out of 10. Not too sweet, but nice texture and good to eat
Canistel - super sweet (may be too sweet for some), another pleasant surprise, 8 out of 10

Thanks again folks, now i have more to try.
Fertilizer i use is Vigoro Citrus&Avocado 6-4-6, plus tried Ironite couple of months ago for minerals.
Wiping  lychee leaf with cloth comes off rusty, confirming it is mites.
I will spray scales and aphids with soap water first and see what happens, and if this does nit help i will try other options suggested.
Ants are everywhere, different kinds, they farm those aphids and scales, and bait does not seem to help.  I will keep fighting.
Many thanks!

Thanks everybody for the advice !
Kumquat, fig, and jackfruit are in pots, the rest are inground. The water comes for a canal behind the backyard.
I will try soap water and miracle grow.
I googled citrus leaf miner and it does look like it.  Advise on forums seems to be just do nothing, which is easy enough.

To set context - the plants get plenty of water and sun, there is mulch around, and i fertilized couple of months ago.  Mangos and avocados, starfruit, sapodilla, dragonfruit, seem fine and happy.  But other plants seem sick.  Your advice would be much appreciated.

Strange coloring on Emperor Lychee leaves

Mamey leaves not happy

Hana Persimmon steps have strange white covering all over, and plan seems sick in general

Meiwa kumquat leaves taking strange sick form

Conadria Fig leaves rusting

Pomegranate just looks sick all over

Atemoya Lisa, previously happy, now has weak stems and rusty leaves

Jackfruit has lots of black ants and aphids

Thanks for the advice Kevin !

I did...  It produced a few fruit on its own after flowering and not fruiting for a couple years.  When I got a Kari and grafted some of it onto the SK, my fruit production from the SK went up about 6X.  I do like the flavor of SK better than Kari, but to get more off of my (relatively tiny) carambola trees it seems better to have both varieties around.

You have already done what I was thinking about doing to my SK.  Do you mind me asking - what grafting method you did to add Kari to an existing SK ?  Did you cut off one branch and cleft grafted on it ?  Veneer grafted ?  Side branch or top branch ?  Any particular time of the year ?

My grafting success rate is 0 out of about dozen.  I read many people say it is very easy, watched countless videos, but I seem to have missed something.  I used a sharp knife, tight fit, parafilm on avocado, mango, and sapodilla with no success...

DRFixembones, I just remembered this page has very good information and suggestions of fruit trees in containers in south Florida: http://www.tropicalfruitnursery.com/container-trees.shtml

On another note, my joints hurt, can you recommend a way to fix them ? ;-)

I was just wondering about strawberry tree in a container, since I don't want to deal with the roots/suckers

Strawberry tree is doing fine in a container so far and is productive.  It is still young though - probably no more than 2 y.o. - so it remains to be seen in longer term.  Requires pruning to keep managable.  I tried rooting pruned branches and was able to root two out of four successfully, which means that with so many cuttings left over from frequent pruning, it is easy to propagate quickly.

Talking about growing fast and roots/suckers problem - I have the same about Mulberry and have it also in a container for the same reason, and it fruits there too.  Mulberry is also super easy to propagate from cuttings, so now I have few that I do not know what to do with.
