Eugenia Hedge blooming.
« on: August 08, 2013, 01:56:10 PM »
I have a row of large over grown Eugenia trees that are blooming. I've been reading that they produce edible fruit. I'm going to be tearing them down in the future to install a wood fence since the roots of the Eugenia hedge are growing into the root zones of other fruit trees that I have which are a bit close to these hedges. Here is one that is identical the Eugenia species that I have.

Is it worth saving one or can I just get rid of them all?

Which eugenia, exactly?

Not sure what species it is. Looks like the hedges were already growing there for many years before I moved into my house. I can tell you for sure that it's not surinam cherry.

australian brush cherry. In California, they produce tasty little fruits. I have many fond childhood memories eating them from the neighbor's hedge. In south FL, they may tease you with some flowers, but good luck getting them to fruit. They make nice hedges though.

I hate to disagree but that is eugenia myrtifolia. The fruit is no good.

I've looked up the species you've mentioned on bing images and yes, it looks like you are correct. It matches.

Jeff, isn't that the eugenia ( australian brush cherry) that has the purple elongated fruit with whitish pithy insides? Used to eat them as a kid in L.A area. :)
