Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: avocados in a lemon growing area?
« on: February 18, 2024, 01:51:46 PM »
nobody is growing lemons or avocados in my area, its too cold :) I'm growing different citrus in a sheltered area where frost can occur.
regarding my initial question, lets say "it depends"  ;)

thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / avocados in a lemon growing area?
« on: February 16, 2024, 06:51:22 AM »
hi!

can regular avocados(not the hardier ones) survive in areas where lemons can be grown without problems? within citrus varieties lemons are one of the least hardy I think.

thanks!

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: from grafting to flowering
« on: December 09, 2023, 06:52:36 AM »
yes, I had the theory of juvenile wood also in mind, I  actually dont know from which part of the tree my scions were taken.
once the bloomed and got propagated from old flowering wood, this shouldn't be a problem anymore. even when scions are taken from a low part.

Cold Hardy Citrus / from grafting to flowering
« on: December 09, 2023, 06:10:50 AM »
hello!

I wonder why does it take so long for hardy citrus to flower after grafting. other citrus start flowering much faster, at least in my experience.
If the scionwood is from a hybrid/seedling which hasn't flowered it would make sense, but thats not the case.
my 2m yuzu had no flowers till now(I grafted it myself).

I am the only one with this "problem"?

thanks!

Citrus General Discussion / cracks in rootstock after freeze
« on: May 12, 2023, 04:58:41 AM »
hi!

unfortunately some of my rootstocks have cracks...
I think this is not due to general deep temperatures.  over winter my citrus were covered by some kind of greenhouse, after winter everything was green and fine. it got warm inside, but not too much, plants seemed to break dormancy(no new shoots or buds visible).
after uncovering the citrus it got pretty cold again for two nights  :(
the rootstocks are swingle, can cracks heal and be able to feed the grafted variety? the grafted varieties have no cracks, but major twig damage, they could be still alive.

thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / banana stalks and mice...
« on: February 07, 2023, 07:08:58 AM »
hey!
there are quite a lot of mice in my growing area. they are common field mice not root voles. they are very selective on which fruit trees(trunks) they start eating. dwarf apple rootstocks were eaten very fast...
do they eat banana stalks? in my area bananas are normally not grown, so I cannot ask others.
I hope nobody has mice problems, but if so, please report  :)

thanks!

« on: February 06, 2023, 04:07:40 PM »
which varieties beside kumquats could be eaten in whole? sweet rind,no bitterness in albedo and of course good tasting flesh.
indio mandarinquat should have these qualities. which else?
are there sweet lemons which also have a sweet rind?

thanks!

Temperate Fruit Discussion / grafting pawpaw with flower buds
« on: April 18, 2021, 06:13:50 AM »
is it possible to graft pawpaw scionwood with flower buds on it?
is there a growing bud left if I remove the flower bud?
I'm not familiar with pawpaw grafting, I know it it possible with other fruit trees(apricots, peaches,..)

thanks!
