Anyone know if these two are the same?

What are you looking to pay on cuttings?

There are a few similar species in the genus that are also monkey pots.

Yes, that is why I put "Lecythis Pisonis" in the title. This one looks the best out of all the Monkey Pots.

Ive got a seedling of this too. Let’s look this up in a few years and exchange some scions, as I think this tree is not self-fertile. Would be happy to trade scions once mine gets large enough to start pruning.

Kevin

Ok, I have one as well. Happy to trade cuttings when mine gets large enough.

I had never even heard of it until now, what a cool looking tree

Yes, it looks really cool. The pots become full of nuts that taste like Brazil nuts they say.

Anyone growing these in Florida?

I can't confirm because my experience was different. Maybe shipping everything the same way is easier for the seller and they don't care to offer anything else.

I see everyone that's willing to share these obscure varieties to be doing us a huge favor. No one's getting rich selling scions. So the more complicated you try to make it, the lesser your order will standout as a priority. I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience.

He might have sold out before your order. I had a similar opinion with a seller that returned my initial order. But I took it too personal. The people here tend to be more genuine. These items can sell fast and it's nothing personal.

Trimming my mammoth and dreams this weekend. There will be only limited amount. Will be shipping out Tuesday.

Note * Frank is not friendly at all and never got back to me after he said he would give a shipping quote. Not a good trader.

Nope! It was just a few minutes after it was posted that I sent a DM. He had condescending tone. Not friendly. Most traders here are super nice and friendly. My message was "Hello, can you ship these cuttings first class since we are in the same state? Thank you" His response with no hello or anything it was, "there is first class it's ground advantage blah blah blah." It's like ok. This dude has issues. No biggie. There are plenty of other good traders here I've dealt with.

It's all about respect and courtesy. That doesn't cost a thing my friend.

This forum is full of incredible resources and decades of experience. You'd have found someone with this cultivar already if it existed, but it seems like you're more dedicated to the legend of this online only fruit than the real world experience of members. That's the friction here.

As you explain, this cultivar is nowhere to be found, other than in marketing materials from Volcano Winery, that members report is of low quality, or from TopTropicals which has a storied history of falsifying cultivars. Who you going to believe?

I wish you luck finding it, and will leave it at that! Do report in this thread when you find it.  :)

TopTropicals has sold it. I was hoping someone here possibly has it. That is all. Not interested, "it's fake and just believe me even though I never seen it." lol Just move along, bud. It's not really that big of a deal.

12
Either this is fabulous trolling on your part BayTropics, or you're suffering the worst case of confirmation bias I've ever seen.

Bush2Beach has spent many days in HI, had the wine himself, what more confirmation do you need?

If this "Vino Tinto" variety was grown and sold at Pine Island as a cultivar, ever, I can guarantee a collector here has it and has probably already fruited it. I would believe a grower on this forum before any commercial enterprise which has profit on the line, juiced by creative marketing and story telling.

Trolling? lol I started this thread inquiring about this Volcano Red Jaboticaba variety I saw online that is now no where to be found. TT sold out of it couple years ago. I'm just asking if anyone had it. That simple. I received a few responses by people saying it's "fake" that never actually looked at it. 🙄 That's neither credible or helpful. An honest would be "I don't know." The way it works is like this. I was hoping someone here actually ordered it. If they confirm if it's either legit or fake. That would great to know. Otherwise it's just speculation and conjecture. Not fact.

I am telling it like it is, I know it can pop bubbles and ruin days but I am not here to sell you anything. Buy a bottle , please!! find out for yourself and report back!!
I don't know what I can add.
The Volcano Winery grows no grapes, they grow no jaboticaba. Their Jaboticaba wine has no taste of Jaboticaba and was literally the worst "wine" I have tried in my life.
I heard they used welch's grape juice and vodka to make their "wine" and after drinking it well that is what it tasted like.
You should really buy a bottle and find out for yourself. I went to the winery, bought the bottle,  it was a joke.

They pay $2 a pound for Jaboticaba.
The only Jabo in Hawaii for 99.9% of people is sold as "Murta" ,by the one existing giant wholesale fruit nursery, It is Sabara.

So this Pele's breath red jabo description and you trying to call me out is bullshit, but I refrained from name calling.

Look and Read all the flavor descriptions coming from people trying to sell you $100 germinated seed of tiny sour bird food, don't believe everything someone is trying to sell you on.

This is an insulting deceptive lie by top tropicals.

The Volcano winery is a joke, a joke!
straight up Welch's grape juice and no , they do not grow or sell Jaboticaba wine.
The description on top trop website is just total garbage.

Dude, are you trolling? LOOK & READ!

I get it! I just need prove. "I heard" does not cut it as far as proof. BTW, I messaged Top Tropicals about their Red Volcano. The rep told me, "They were grown from seed on Pine Island. They are faster growing and bit more cold hardy variety" They have not had these for sale for years. If I can pick one up for a few bucks I'm going to examine the leaves and compare with my Sabra and others ,let it grow, and taste and compare. Not just make assumptions from the "rumors I heard on the "internets."

This winery is buying locally grown Jaboticaba in Hawaii with no mention of it being a special variety at all, more than likely most is Sabara. Think about it if it was some crazy rare special variety would you sell the fruit for $3.50 a pound when you can make at least that much per seed?

It appears they ran out of their own Volcano Red berries and they are contracting out.  😁

16
Just because it's on the internet, doesn't make it true. Careful!

Internet, TV, website, or your best friend. If doesn't matter. Claims need to be proven.

BTW, I had an "expert" in the tropical fruit community tell me things I found to be 100% untrue.

So let's not blame the internet. Let's blame the people using the internet. 😁

I would not buy from a site saying that yellow jaboticaba is plinia glomerata... :P :P :P
There are numerous times something like this has happened in the community, but it is ultimately one's own call :)
Just putting in the evidence.

Just about every online nursery I had issues with when it comes to FAKE trees: Top Tropicals like I mentioned. Much WORSE is Everglades Swamp trees. That company is HORRIBLE!

19
That’s just renaming of a red to get more sales. Not cool.

They say it's a rare red Jaboticaba from Hawaii. It could be red variation. Let's not call it "fake" until there is something concrete to prove it's fake.
It’s fake. Top tropical has a reputation of doing that. Just ask any OG grower here.

Also all true Jaboticabas are in the plinia genus.
Myrciaria is an incorrect nomenclature
Hope it sheds some light.

Evidence is required. These type of blanket claims of "fake" are not very scientific without physically examining what Top Tropicals is selling/shipping. BTW, consensus is not fact. Not defending Top Tropicals. As I purchased many mango trees from Top Tropicals. An Irwin mango tree I purchased from them turned out to be Mun Khun Si. A completely different fruit in every way. It does not mean the rest of the mango trees I received from Top Tropicals are fake. Besides the Irwin, all of the mango trees I have purchased from them have fruited and are as described.

Bottom line of making claims of "fake" or "real" without physically examining what is sold is not credible in any way.

Pretty sure that's a wine, not a variety of Jaboticaba. I think they use regular red Jaboticaba to make it

No, it's a Hawaiian Jaboticaba variety used to mix with grapes to make wine.

Jaboticaba tree variety Volcano Red (La Vinotinto), Myrciaria

"This rare variety of Jaboticaba is used for production of Hawaiian wine Volcano Red. Hawaiians have long honored Pele, the fiery goddess of the volcano. We have created a wine to honor her tempestuous, passionate spirit. Volcano Red is a medium bodied red wine that blends both red and white grapes with the island’s exotic jaboticaba berries.
Red Jaboticaba Vine is also popular in Brazil as La Vinotinto.

This variety is more vigorous and faster growing than regular Jaboticaba. Leaves are slightly bigger. The plant can take light freeze once established, and short periods of waterlogging."

Anyone have one either air-layered or grafted?

25
I have newly grafted trees, so still awaiting to confirm success.

Never mind. You never responded to any on my DM's. I got it from someone else.

Sure I did, and then I responded back. But no problem, glad you got what you need.

I think something is wrong with the message center with this website. I didn't get a response from several of my messages. No worries and thank you.
I told you how much it was and that I had to wait to see if the new grafts healed and you said ‘sounds good’ and asked about how long.

No worries man. All good.
