I have some sheetrock material left over from some construction at my home. My soil needs Calcium and the main ingredient in drywall is gypsum - is it safe to add as is to the soil or are there toxic additives that are a no-no?

Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I read somewhere that consumption of Soursop (Annona Muricata) in large quantities could lead to a disease similar to Parkinson's.
First, is this actually true and second, does this extend to other members of the Annona family?

Reason I'm asking is I love sugar apple (Annona Squamosa) and I eat lots.....

Sam

Good day,

I am planning to plant a Paradise Nut (Lecythis Zabucajo) seedling in my home island of Trinidad and I've seen these get very big here.

Can they be kept short to about 20 feet and still bear fruit successfully? The reason I'm asking is I want to try to keep it as a backyard tree.
How long do they take to fruit from seedling? (I've been told 5 years from the person I got the seedling from but I find it a little hard to believe!).

Apparently it is quite tasty.

Sam

I have a seedling Ilama (pink fleshed I believe) and it's about 4 years old, with no sign of flowers.

How many years do these typically take to fruit from seeds and if it should be fruiting already, what can I do to help it?

Sam

Good day all,

Can someone please help me identify this plant? It looks like some type of Artocarpus but I'm not certain. It was in a starter pot so I'm assuming it's a fruit tree.....

I was clearing up some space for some new plants and found this guy in this growbag but could not remember what I planted.

I'm thinking it's a Pouteria of some sort (maybe P. multiflora).....

Looking forward to responses

Hey guys,

Would like to know if Pepino can thrive and fruit properly in a truly tropical environment?

Would it require shade, full sun - any experience with this?

Thanks!

Curious as to whether mamey apple (Mammea americana) could be used as rootstock for Mangosteen as they are within the same family group (but probably different genus)?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is Abiu dioecious?
« on: August 25, 2014, 12:57:55 PM »
My Abiu tree flowered last year for the first time but I got no fruits. It is flowering again now and I am curious as to whether Abiu is dioecious, or, do I need another flowering tree nearby in order for fruit set?

I have small plants in Garcinia Acuminata and Garcinia Madruno and they are quite similar. In fact, if they weren't labelled, I would mistake them! Has this fruit simply been given both names over time?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Do mangosteen seeds develop new shoots?
« on: January 09, 2014, 12:24:34 PM »
I managed to germinate a mangosteen (G. Mangostana) seed and the shoot got to about 2 inches tall and then it died. The base of the shoot is still alive (or I assume so since it is still green) but it's been about 3 months now with no new shoots, nothing. Temperature and humidity are not a problem since this was done in the tropics.

Will any new shoots develop?
Can I do anything that could possibly cause growth to occur?

Looking for seeds for some of the lesser known Annona family - Annona Diversifolia (Ilama), Annona Senegalensis (Wild Custard Apple) and Annona Scleroderma (Posh-te).
