Hello,

This post is premature as mango season is just kicking off in South Florida, but this season, I'm really interested in trying Malika mangos, so I know whether to graft onto my trees.  If you have any that you'd be willing to sell me, please send me a pm.

Thank you,
Michael

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Purple Haze Dragonfruit
« on: August 04, 2021, 06:55:58 PM »
Hello,

For local pickup (or I can deliver), in South Florida area, I'm selling a long Purple Haze piece of dragonfruit (almost 4').

Long story short, I didn't have it supported well, wind from the bad weather toppled it over and broke a huge piece off.  I'm selling for $30 to a good home!

Send me a pm if interested.

Cheers,
Mike

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Carrie Mango Tree Top Work Project
« on: July 20, 2021, 08:42:10 PM »
Hello!

One of my buddies has a Carrie tree, and he's interested in top working into other varieties.  One of the techniques we were considering is the top work method in this video by Dr. Campbell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dyjkl9Fzzs4&t=1s).  Essentially in that video he decapitates an entire tree, then grafts 4 scions into the trunk.  My friend has about 5 scaffolding branches and so the idea is to graft 4 scions per main scaffolding branch (see red arrows in pics).

Will grafting across the 5 scaffolding branches lead to high take rates and should we graft them all at once simultaneously, or can we attempt to do 1 scaffold branch, check if it takes, the continue to the rest of the tree?

Or, for the highest probability of takes, is it recommended to graft like in the video, and decapitate the entire tree and graft 4 scions on to the trunk?

Or for a tree this size, is there any other grafting techniques we should be investigating?

As always, any input is most appreciated!

Thanks for your time!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Late(r) Season Mango Question
« on: June 12, 2021, 07:59:15 AM »
Hello Mango Enthusiasts!

I'm trying to extend the mango season as much as possible, and have Venus & Orange Essence already.  What are top tier varieties that can extend those by a few weeks?  I find Honey Kiss too mild, and Keitt tastes average to me.  I would rather cut the season shorter than eating average mangos (average to my palate at least).  Options I'm considering:

M4
Cotton Candy
Little Gem
Ambika
Amrapali (believe I read it was later)

Other desirable characteristics - blooms easily, precocious, productive, & moderate disease resistance.  It would be nice for it to have small to medium internodal lengths (less than Venus ideally).  However, growth habit takes a backseat to superior fruit quality to be honest.

Would love to hear opinions & thanks!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help me graft my mango please
« on: April 28, 2021, 08:07:01 AM »
Hello All!

I'm going to be grafting other late season varieties on my Venus tree (planted last year as a 7 gallon).  I haven't grafted yet, but have watched a decent amount of YouTube videos and also read good material in this thread (https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=29250.0).  As a newb, I'd like to find out if the places I have marked in my pictures are good places to try grafts?

The tree is flushing right now, so from what I understand, it's best to graft when the tree is active.  I was thinking about 3 places on the tree.  2 lateral branches, and one of the central lead branches.

Please let me know if these are viable places to graft or any other suggestions.

Hello,

I've recently started growing pineapples and already have a few Kauai Sugarloafs and Kona Sugarloafs.  I'd like to increase my collection and buy Abacaxi, Queen, Cheese Pine, AusFestival, and Monte Lirio.

I haven't reached out to the USDA germplasm repository in Hilo, Hawaii, and have no idea how it works.  Please send me a message if you have any of the varieties and would be willing to sell to me.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pineapple Rack Products?
« on: January 11, 2021, 10:53:39 AM »
Good Morning!

The thought has crossed my mind about using a pineapple rack to maximize the space I have to grow pineapples.  I'm thinking about using a heavy duty plastic garage shelving system that local hardware stores sell.  The issue is the vertical clearance is roughly 15" between shelves which I don't think is tall enough to support a plant plus fruit.  Does anyone here grow pineapples like this and what products do you recommend?

As an example of something I was considering, please see this link.

I'm looking to buy 1-2 Sugarloaf mangos from somewhere in South Fl.  I own a tree and would like to make sure I enjoy it before putting it in the ground.

If anyone knows where I can purchase some from, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks!!

Hello All,

I have a question about tipping my Sweet Tart.  It has flushed branches that have 1 main dominant shoot, and then will have 4 lateral branches (see attached photo's).  I want to encourage as much lateral branching as possible.  Should I clip the main shoot off or should I clip right underneath the entire bunch of shoots, so that it hopefully produces 4 shoots?  I know in this youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99bv-KJ8wkE), around 2:40 Chris mentions something about trimming that main shoot, but I'm not sure I 100% follow.  Or should I leave it as is, and wait for the next flush to tip?  Thank you for any help guys!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maha Chanok Uneven Growth
« on: June 04, 2017, 07:54:28 PM »
Hello All,

Is it normal for Maha Chanok tree's to grow unevenly?  I bought a 7 gallon, and overall I'm pleased with how much it has grown, except one of the branches is not growing at all.  I'm concerned there may be issues with the roots stunting growth for one of the branches.  Is this a valid concern?  Please see below pics:

Side Angle Taken June 4, and you can see the branch to the far left looks the same as the first Side Angle Pic

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mexican Mangos - Top Tier?

I'll be vacationing in Mexico, and wondering if there's any top tier Mexican mangos I should try and source while there.  Does anyone know of any?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Container Growing Dwarf Mango's
« on: March 26, 2017, 08:01:25 PM »
Hello,

My local nursery has Pickering, Fairchild, and Ice Cream available.  I want to keep the mango plants in pots for the long-term, and was concerned with them becoming rootbound.  I spoke to one of the nursery employee's, and was told I could plant them in a 60 gallon pot (I'm buying 3g's), and I can leave them there.  I thought I had to size up the pots as the plant grew.  The employee's point was that it's equivalent to planting a tree in the ground.  Is that true, and is this the correct way to successfully grow these varieties?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to grow polyembryonic seedling?
« on: September 17, 2016, 08:20:26 AM »
Hello All,

I have a few Julie Mango seeds I'm planning on growing (I'm ok with amount of time it will take to produce fruit) & I'm assuming at least one seed will be polyembryonic.  How do I grow each sprout to maturity?  Initially all the sprouts from 1 seed will be in the same pot, but how and when do I separate them into separate pots?  I know 1 sprout will not be true to the parent & not produce fruit, but the others should be produce fruit.  The reason I want to do this is to delay my decision on which one is not good, and give all the plants the best opportunity to grow.  Any help is most appreciated and thank you!
