Yea it has some resemblance of Lisa like my Birula. Quand calls it Lisa so you have to believe him but $375 for a 15 gallon is outrageous

$375 is kind of average price at his nursery. You will fall off the chair to see the price tag of phetpakchong $1,200.

My Honey Jar went dormant, but is now vigorously pushing new growth, too, like it was Spring.  Unlike your Sugarcane, mine is currently staying dormant.

Do you think it will gradually go to sleep soon or start to wake up like spring? My husband told me the tea really does the magic on the tree. I don't know if it is the case.

Today I saw My sugarcane jujube suddenly sent out new leaves . I wonder if this is normal or it is a result of giving it compost tea from  SD Hydroponics store? I watered the tea last Sunday and go to the store to get free compost tea to water again this afternoon.
Has anyone used this kind of tea before ? How often should I use it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What Is Eating My Papayas?
« on: November 17, 2017, 12:49:28 PM »
Last night I put the Rat Zapper next to the papaya plant and this morning found a zapped rat.  I'll keep putting it out at night to see if there are more.
Strange because this is the first time that any of the backyard critters have gone after the papayas.

Looked at the damage the rat did to my beautiful dragon fruit. I will set the trap and kill him

Exotica nursery in vista will have lemon zest and sweet tart.  I got the last coconut cream from them two months a go.  I know they can order more.

Last Sunday, I saw one lemon zest ($150.00) and another one $400.00.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What cause longan fruits 'skin crack
« on: November 09, 2017, 10:40:47 PM »
I experienced some cracking of my fruit as well, especially during the heat wave. I try to keep the moisture level consistent in order to eliminate one of the many possible causes of the cracking.

Simon

Look like you have more than one variety right Simon? What are those names? My fruits,  look similar to the first pic you posted. How old is your tree? Mine is almost 3 years, and have not grown much since I bought it.

Very nice Sam.  I love dr white too.

Do you need to hand pollinate ? Is it chewy?

It can be from uneven moisture levels, lack of Calcium or other minerals, changes in weather such as going from heat waves to cold weather and also from fertilizing at improper times. If you randomly fertilize, the fertilizers can cause rapid expansion of the fruit which can split the Fruit.

You may also notice splitting of fruit when trees go from fruiting to vegetative growth. Do you have a picture of your tree?

Simon

I just cut down 2 branches of fruits that my tree produced this year. I noticed the tree flushed out new growth from the top

Probably extra watering along with the heat we got a few weeks ago.
All of my longans turned out fine, I really haven't watered them much.

I think I watered too much. I heard longan will drop fruits if they don't get enough water. Plus I plant it in the pot, so I am afraid the tree lacks of water if I don't water it for 2 days

Does anyone know what cause longan fruit split open ? Too cold, too much water or lack of water? I am sad beacause I will not have the chance to taste mature , ripped longan fruits first time this year.

Ok, thanks Brandon909.
Thanks everyone for sugesstions and offerrings. I think I am going to check out linda farm in fallbrook to see if she has good price and healthy trees, and also a chance to visit a farm

36
I bought three varieties of K-1, C.Charlie and Bruni, and it was free shipping.

Thanks Rustropic

37
It was delivered to me for free. The cutting is quite large and looks healthy. I bought it in August.

Do you know how many I have to buy to get free shipping? Do you have pics?

38
I have.  My favorite from what I have is American Beauty.  Nice big fruit

I have American beauty too. It had one fruit when I first bought it in nov 2016 , but not produce any bloom since then. The same thing happened to my red sugar. My physical graffiti produced many sweet fruits with different sizes.  I enjoyed the taste very much.

39
I bought many different types of cutting here http://www.spicyexotics.com

Rustropic,

How much is the shipping fee for more than one cutting? Is it long and healthy vine? How long it takes to fruit at your house?

40
RodneyS,

Thanks for the information . Just wonder if your trees have fruited and do you like it.

Keep both of them, in my experience, the strongest is the clone, and if the seeds come up mono, it may be because the nucellar seedling outcompeted all the other ones. Although occasionally you'll get a strong zygote.

Will keep eyes on it, and thanks for your advice

42
Hi RodneyS,

Would you please tell me more information about this two variety such as their sweetness, weight, production and self polinate or cross pollination . I heard really much about the names but have no knowledge about it.

Thanks,

Dragon

43
Hi,

If you are going to prune the tree and consider throwing away, please let me know. I am willing to pay for the shipping fee/cost of the cutting or pick up locally.

Thanks,
Dragon

Warren is correct.  I have planted many coconut cream seeds and they are poly

What do I do with two little trees come from 1 seed? Should I remove one and which one should be? My ccr mango gave me one fruit, and I am so excited to try germinating the seeds to see if it is truly poly.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Carica papaya in Florida
« on: November 02, 2017, 12:33:08 AM »

Is your  papaya in the picture called tainung 1?  Is it sweet ?

Tainung was a hybrid developed in Taiwan. It is not Tainung, this is a heirloom papaya in northern Thailand passed down by generations, flesh is orange and very sweet. Some threes are even 20 years old. I need 3 days to eat one they are so big.
I believe is Khaek Dum somehow crossed with others, normally Khaek Dum is long and thiner.
[/quote]

I wish I can find this variety in U.S nursery. I usually see Mexican , solo . The rare one are tainung-1 and tr.hovey. I bought these two last year and they both died on me. I just bought tainung 1 again in August, but it doesn't look healthy at all.

For 9b zone from my trials (I am in zone 7b-8a), Thai papaya is the strongest (the strongest is Babaco, but it's not real papaya). I say this because I collected some seeds from northern Thailand where temperatures in the winter drop to 6-10C (40-50F). It will not die when is cold. BUT it needs to be dry. No wet feet. (actually there in 3 months it rains twice). They grow very fast, and make flowers around 1m (3 ft) tall. Hawaii papayas are very sensitive to cold, they root rot fast.
I have another method, I grow them outside in land during the summer then I cut the top off, root it and pot it. New flowers start close to the ground like 30cm (1ft), the root system is very shallow, and no more tap root, it's a method they use in Thailand.
Sure you can use mountain papaya as a rootstock for normal papaya ( I am going to make this soon and on other Vasconcellea speacies, I already successfully grafted papaya on babaco).
This is the papaya in Thailand, they weight 2-3kg, no virus present (should you want some seeds let me know, I carefully collected them and removed the sarcotesta individually, germination is 90%) :

and here is in my greenhouse, this is only 5 months old from seed:

Nice! My babaco roots rotted out. Papaya, like my previous Red Lady works great here. Right now the 'Linda' variety I have is the most vigorous. I am not really working for cold or PRSV tolerance here, just something with vigor. I planted some Vasconcellea pubescens X quercifolia and a couple Jacaratia mexicana that haven't come up yet. I lost my seed tray of the Vasconcellea palandensis but that would be a good candidate.

Is your  papaya in the picture called tainung 1?  Is it sweet ?
