How to best graft small CCPP scions?
« on: March 10, 2021, 11:49:17 PM »
I ordered Ponkan Mandarin and Xie Shan Satsuma scions to topwork may orange tree. Xie Shan Satsuma scions look decent but some of the Ponkan scions are small - almost like twigs.  Any ideas how to best graft the smaller scions?

Their scions are pretty lousy.  Especially considering the cost.  However I've had 100% success with them doing cleft grafts.  You can cut them in half and do multiples.  It helps to cut the tree way back as well.

I tried T budding and had 0 success.

I ordered 4 sticks last year, and got 1 circular and 3 angular ones.  I suppose if you're budding, it doesn't matter, but I haven't tried budding yet.  I cut them in half and did 3 bark & 5 clefts, with only 1 angular cleft straight failing.  I've done a couple clefts with other scions that small, onto new growth, but with only about 60% success.  I prefer clefts, but now wouldn't hesitate with bark grafts to get it into a desired position.

I only use cleft grafts, graft union blends in 2 yrs and can't see where it was grafted. Don't graft the skinny ones on new growth, look for branches that are skinny but at least 6 months old and you will have no problems. If the scion is very small diameter(1/16"-1/8") then I will use the Kumin "Bark Flap Graft" method, works great.

Had to look that up.  This one? https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=32587
I have tried that and the variant at the bottom, except I was tucking the scion against the vertical cut instead of deeper in the flap.

Score rootstock like a T-Budding.
Cut scion stick end like doing a bark graft.
Slide stick down.

I can’t access postimages.org right now

You have a lot of buds, I would use bud grafting. You will eventually have at least one to take.
I use even 2 mm buds. You just need active growing rootstock.

lebmung, I have a question for you on the smaller (2mm) bud grafts. What is your percentage of good takes ?

Older Valentine stick graft under T-Budding cuts.

Jan 22nd Kishu graft.
Stick of scion in a Forkert graft.

Another Kishu graft on same day.
Scar beneath is from failed T-Budding.
This rootstock has thick bark even on new shoot.
Many T-Budding failures on it.
0 failures with scion sticks.

Nice, fully calloused grafts. How long have you been doing budding/grafting?
