Help ID these mangos
« on: May 13, 2021, 10:28:07 AM »
A couple of years ago these mangos were grafted but improperly or not labelled.
They made fruit for the first time this year and my fried has asked if I could help identify them.
I am asking the more experienced folks on the forum to help with this ID.

Variety # 1 ________________________________

Variety # 2 ________________________________

I took out the third variety which there appears to be agreement on.

#3 is Valencia pride. I have one that my parents like eating green.
Don’t rush, take time and enjoy life and food.

Anything I need to do to get some more suggestions?  Especially for 1 and 2?
Perhaps ask for a photograph of the trees? or leafs?

That looks like a red mystery mango for the top most photo.

Thanks, I thought that might be a sweet tart or Beverly but the blush and somewhat elongated shape says maybe not.

I removed the third variety, there is agreement it is a Valencia pride.

I can't tell you for sure based off the picture, but it looks like could potentially be Sunrise?  I say that due to the "double beak", which I've observed on Sunrise.  I've eaten tons of them, so happy to provide confirmation with a taste test  ;) ;D

See description from Alex on Sunrise to see if it sounds like the tree.

Sunrise was a Jakarta seedling from the breeding program of Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, FL (planting # 25-28).

The fruit are oval-shaped, medium-sized, and turn a yellow-orange color with green background at maturity. The flesh is yellow, fiberless, firm, and contains a monoembryonic seed. The flavor is very rich, resinous, and spice-noted, comparable to Bombay and Jakarta, very much belonging in the Indian/West Indian-flavor group. Sunrise is one of our favorite varieties to belong to this group!

The trees are very vigorous growers with upright growth habit and dense canopy. They seem to have good anthracnose resistance and fruit well in Loxahatchee, possibly being a good alternative for people wanting to grow Jakarta or Bombay under more humid conditions.

However, Sunrise may have other disease problems according to reports, so it may no longer be grafted. Our tree has been disease-free though and we have considered adding more Sunrise trees to our program.

It is a mid-season mango in Florida ripening from late-June through July.

Flavor: Indian/West Indian

Country: Florida - USA

Good observation with the beak.
Sunrise is a possibility, thanks.

Funny, I also suggested a taste test of all three varieties to confirm :)

Can you post some follow up pictures?
The second one has a Julie looking bottom but it has a red blush, I'd guess Super Julie for now
The third one has a Palmer shape but not the color. How does the sap smell? Thai or more Florida type?

That sure doesn't look like a Sunrise.

Figured we probably should have a running ID thread.
I'm pretty sure my father grafted this but the tag must have fell off.
I thought it was dwarf Hawaii but now I'm not to sure.
Probably got it from the USDA.
