Tropical Fruit Discussion / Did I ID this correctly?
« on: July 28, 2013, 10:57:34 PM »
I found this fruit while in Malaysia and made a video of me eating it. Looking online, I found a picture matching it listed as a Santol, but more often I see a larger orange fruit listed. So am I wrong? Is this a different variety of Santol, or another fruit entirely?

Thanks for the tips. Doglips, I unfortunately won't have time to go to Vietnam, but I'll be near its border with Laos, so hopefully some of the things you saw there will be available as well. I was in Malaysia last winter and ate so much jackfruit, rose apples and mangosteens.. and for such cheap prices too!

Mike T, I will be heading to the northern regions, so the Champasak and Pakse unfortunately won't be on my itinerary. I'm planning on going to Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Phonsavan, Muang Noi, Nong Khiaw and phongsali. Since Vientiane and LP are bustling cities compared to the rest of the country I'm hoping the markets there will have things from the south as well. I've heard about the creepy crawlies for sale.. as a vegetarian... I think I'll pass. Phongsali is especially far from modernization and I have been warned about seeing BBQ rats, decapitated dog heads and a variety of giant insects for sale at the markets there. Does it make me a bad vegetarian to want to see this?

Hey everyone,

Well this fruit hunter is going to SE Asia for about 4 months  (Dec-April) anyone have any advice on places to go or rare fruits to track down. I went to Malaysia last year and had about 20 fruits I never had before. I'm looking forward to tracking down even more, especially in Laos and Hong Kong since I've never been before.

I made a cake filling out of goldenberries and some buddha's hand rind once. It was a surprisingly good with chocolate cake, despite the odd combination. I just simmered the mashed fruits with some sugar and water.
Or just dip them in chocolate like you would a strawberry, its very tasty like that.

Recipes / Vegan Eggfruit Nog
« on: July 24, 2013, 11:37:49 PM »
I made some eggfruit nog the other day, by using an eggfruit in place of actual eggs. The yolky taste of the fruit makes a surprisingly close substitute and its vegan if you're into that sort of thing. Here's what I put:

1 egg fruit
1 1/4 c soymilk (sweetened, otherwise add sugar to taste)
1/4 t nutmeg
1/2 t cinnamon
1/4 t salt
1 t vanilla extract

Blend until smooth, add more soy milk if too thick. I didn't have any on hand, but if you throw in some bourbon I think it would taste even more like the real thing.

I really like these fruits. The flavor is very subtle, but they are very crispy and refreshing.

Hi there

My name is Jared and I don't grow (NYC apartment, couldn't if I tried), but I do have a love for hunting down fruits I've never had before. I travel a lot for work. Last winter I spent three months in Malaysia and was coming across so many new fruits that I decided to create a youtube series reviewing what I found. I am, I admit no expert in this field, but its a fascination of mine and I hope to learn more from this forum. The series I made is called "weird fruit explorer" if you'd like to take a look.
