I like the potential variety name. I hope this one bears out as a legit variety you can propagate.

I think this one was just a random freak chance...I'm not sure if seeds will be true, but the seedlings are super slow growing, and hard to establish in my experience.  I think grafting them will be the way to go...but only time will tell.  A tree can change behavior once it's been grafted, not being as productive as the original seedling tree.

let me give a little background info on the "Anomaly":

when i first obtained seeds (from a friend, who was at an old grower's house in FL, who had a great collection of jaboticaba...he took some pics of an old fruiting tree i couldn't identify, so I asked him send me seeds)...I got 3 seedlings that resulted from the seeds....lol I remember I marked them with a pink polka dot ribbon....they grew slow as hell, and always looked a little ragged, with burnt leaf tips, and slight chlorosis...I forgot about them after the second year, they were about 10-12 inch tall...in 3 gal pots....then, about 1yr later, still in 3 gal pots, staying saturated for much of the time in a kiddie pool, I was going through my plants, and happened to notice one of them blooming.  I was surprised because it wasn't just in one patch, there were several patches of flowers.  I immediately pruned the tree to expose the caulis, and put it into a larger pot with good soil (fafard 3B).  I gave one of the other seedlings away to a friend, and kept one (which is still in a 3 gal pot, with trunk caliper of only .5 inch at best).  The other siblings of "Anomaly" have not flowered yet.

Thanks for the full back story man! How has it been in actual fruit production compared to a similarly sized red jabo?

u welcome...

the production is amazing.
but a couple times i got decent bloom and fruit set, but lost the crop due to animals...squirrels were insane in spring...until I went on a killing spree...after i laid out about 4 of them, they got the message....

lol until the next round of bold teenage squirrels...

With image recognition software and robotics getting where it is, we aren't far off from a completely autonomous airsoft sentry gun that could recognize and engage squirrels on sight.

Adam, this tree is incredible. When you first posted about this tree, I was thinking it would produce one or two small crops and then stop but that does not appear to be the case at all. I can't believe the heavy production you are getting on such a small caliper trunk.

This is the perfect tree for those that want a small and compact tree with heavy production. It's a double edged sword in a fantastic manner. The constant heavy production creates a self dwarfing tree.

With so much flowering juices flowing in this miraculous tree, I wonder if you would get early flowering if you grafted another variety onto this tree? Thanks for sharing the background of this tree, I love hearing the history of excellent selections.

Adam
is it possible to plant them too deep ?
Just curious since its a rainforest tree,
and i am guessing getting a lot of mulch /trees falling on it, and also water flooding it.

i had to re-plant the red you had sold me
i put it in ground several months ago,
and had built up a mound of compost , coffee grounds and mulch around it.
so much so, it buried the trunk an inch deep.
(with this blazing heat we get, in full sun, i was watering almost daily to prevent burned leaves)

Anyway, i pulled it up, and re-planted.
now, since the ground was soft and wet,
and my dog who leans on shrubs/trees etc... looking for lizards
had uprooted the thing again... just a bit on one side...
i was able to add some soil under it, but now the plant is looking shoddy.
i am hoping its strong enough to handle the winter.

----

this is the larger one i got from PIN 2 yrs ago.

this is the smaller one i got from you Adam.
i dont remember what kind ?
I think you said it looked like a cross ?

WoW, totally amazing little jabo that could! it's quite appropriate for the 'Prince of Plinias' to have such a find!
Look forward to seed or scion wood to become available one day!!! 8)  Thanks for posting update ;)

Really amazing, Adam.

How many seeds have you grown into seedlings over the last ten or so years? Just to get a feel for the odds of finding something out of the ordinary like the 'Anomaly'

thanks Robert, I hope to have some seeds to sell soon...i might have to do some sort of lottery...or restrict buyers to 2 seeds maximum....I haven't figured it out yet...but i definitely won't allow one person to buy all the seeds.  As for scions or grafted plants, that is still years away it seems.

Solko, i think i really started to plant Plinia seeds about 10yr ago, and then started collecting them from every source I could (over 20 separate sources, foreign and domestic) ...I probably planted about 3 thousand seeds (maybe more?) by the time I stumbled upon this special seedling...I think there was lots of luck involved, because there were 3 seedlings from the same batch, and only one of them has started to flower!  The other two haven't done anything yet, and are still less than 4ft tall, and are about 4yr old.

here are some more pics to give you an idea of the size:

Any chance of seedlings being available at the Manatee Fruit Tree Sale?

still too early!  but looks like I will have to do a lottery for seeds!

they are gonna be $5 ea, with maximum of 2 seed per buyer...and it's ok to buy just one seed.

it comes with a free red jabuticaba seed (each "anomaly" seed will be matched with a red jabo seed) so you can compare them.

I will post more details soon...

if you want to be entered into the lottery for a chance to buy seeds from the tree, please post a quick message on this thread, I will announce when I'm finished taking names, and when seeds are ready to ship, and when the name drawing will be.  I'm going to write down names on paper and draw names from a cup.

I will also post another thread on facebook for people to post requests to enter the lottery.

I hope to have about 10-18 seeds to sell...remember they are $5 ea, and max purchase is 2 seeds...orders for one seed are ok...and each seed purchased is matched with a free red jabo seed to compare with the "Anomaly" seed.
