« on: July 29, 2020, 10:01:16 PM »
Which jackfruit varieties are considered “crispy”? Which is best in your opinion? And Has anyone tried to arrange them on a scale from softest to crispest based on variety?

We’re growing a few. Specifically Nishikawa, Yamagata, Kahaluu, Malama, and San Miguel. Nishikawa has fruited before and is excellent.

do you have any of these trees for sale on the farm?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Where to buy 3 way conduit connectors
« on: June 18, 2020, 05:27:46 PM »
if that was electrical conduit she was using in the video check with an electrical supply co. in your area. they probably will not look the same but may have something that will work. I know home depot sells pvc pipe fittings like that if you want to use plastic instead of metal.

anyway, these look like what she was using: https://www.amazon.com/FLAT-CORNER-CANOPY-FITTINGS-BATTING/dp/B06WD8CGRL/ref=pd_sbs_86_4/131-2667121-0409115?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B06WD8CGRL&pd_rd_r=579ccb3e-8a29-4339-bf9f-9607da59cd27&pd_rd_w=IQaIs&pd_rd_wg=X3ZIF&pf_rd_p=bdc67ba8-ab69-42ee-b8d8-8f5336b36a83&pf_rd_r=NTQZEA3FHC4426WG9SKT&psc=1&refRID=NTQZEA3FHC4426WG9SKT

just search for "canopy kits" in amazon.

I also encourage the use of trail cameras commonly used by deer hunters. These will take photos and videos in the dark without using a flash. The photographed subject isn't tipped off.

I have thought of using trail cameras but the problem is I only have fruit trees.  ;D will probably spot them as they are raiding my trees, and maybe steal those too.

fence permit is in the review stages now. I am hoping that will help.

I recently got some rare cultivars of macadamia and I ate some this
year that were dehydrated and they were the best nuts I have ever
eaten beside pistachios. I really want to grow them and I have 5 young
trees now.

what are the cultivars? and do you know if there's one that will do well here in SoFlo?

I just caught another fruit thief.  This time after my Alano sapodillas. Confronted them and said why do you steal instead of ask and he said, he just didn’t want to bother me. 😂 the guys wife then chimes in saying “I walked by the other day and saw them and I’m pregnant, and had cravings”.  There is no excuse for it. Get it elsewhere. I don’t know how they find me on a dead end street. Tree is maybe 6’ tall. I don’t have a single fruit tree over 12’

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What is your favorite banana variety?
« on: June 04, 2020, 08:13:12 AM »
I have grown: blue java, raja puri, kandrian, saba, phillipine & jamaican lacatan, fhia 18, fhia 23, double mahoi, hua moa, williams, veinte cohol, pisang raja, dwarf orinoco, goldfinger, dwarf and tall namwah, dwarf cavendish, dwarf cuban red, dwarf brazillian, sh3640, manzano, njali poovan?! dwarf PR plantain, Fhia 21 and maybe 2 others whose name escapes me right now.

flavor wise for me: namwah

but overall, only two varieties that have been worth growing for me are : dwarf brazillian, and sh3640.
I get big healthy mats from both and big bunches of fruit reliably. they are on oppossite ends of the property and I dont do anything extra to them. I have just set them on the ground and forgotten about them until it's time to trim leaves, or harvest fruit.

I highly recommend Grumichama. You can grow it as a large bush, hedge or small tree. The fruit are best when eaten black in color. They look over ripe but that is when they taste great.

Bill
it is a grafted lychee, probably 8' tall now and about 4 years old. it's flowered before, but no fruit.

9
Grumichama, Pitomba, Loquat, & Macadamia nuts growing is SoFlo. Is it worth growing these fruits if you've got the room? never tasted a grumichama or pitomba.  And what varieties of Loquat & Macadamia nut trees perform best in 10b. I dont want to make the mistake I made with my sweetheart lychee that never produces anything but leaves. Looking for varieties that will fruit reliably. So who's growing them and what are your thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit thieves rant

Many of us wait for this time of year to enjoy the fruits of our labor but regrettably It's also fruit thief season.  Besides the typical iguanas, racoons, possums, birds, and squirrels, people are the worst they're out and about at all hours.

A few people knock on the door and ask, which is the polite thing to do but they knock  even at night  sometimes. Even then I must confess it still gets on my nerves a bit. These people are not neighbors on my street, I have no idea where they come from and how they make their way to me almost at the end of a dead end street?

They'll knock asking for mangos, june plums, jackfruit etc and if you say no but you can buy some they quickly lose interest. I guess stolen fruit taste sweeter.
I'm sorry to feel like the little red hen but no, grow some in your own yard or purchase them. and unless you see fruit spoiling on the floor as an obvious sign that the residents of the house dont care for the fruit don't even knock to ask.

I wonder for everyone I catch how many get away with it.

Those who reap where they don't sow are the worst kind of people.
post and wire fence going up tomorrow; because I'm sick of it.

I'm at the point I can spot them when they drive past the front window and begin to slow down. I'm considering video recording them from now on, and putting printed still shots of their faces at local supermarkets to publicly shame the thieves; who knows, maybe a youtube channel in the works.  ;D some good should come of it.

anyway, I know y'all feel my pain.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: At last! Now what?!
« on: May 21, 2020, 12:31:53 PM »
I would like to definitely grind the stumps down.
But it will be all up to me, I will have to rent one and have it be a DIY thing; after asking several tree companies many were hesitant because of the slope of the bank leading down to the water and the weight of the stump grinder. they were concerned equipment would end up in the water.

I know some people also have mentioned drilling holes into the stumps and pouring pool acid in them, to burning the stumps out by building a fire on them.

I am open to suggestions.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / At last! Now what?!
« on: May 20, 2020, 08:05:33 PM »
Finally took down some 100’ + Australian pines that have been on my mind for the last 9 years. Question now is what to plant? I am open to suggestions.
I’m definitely going to put a passion fruit trellis up against the street to mark my property line.  Are there any varieties that are sweet? Looking to plant 3 different ones.

To replace the pines I’m considering: loquat, canistel, macadamia, atemoya, white sapote, lychee, avocado, and a late season mango.
What varieties would y’all recommend?

Already have the following mangos: Julie, Pickering, Edgar , nam doc mai, Maha Chanok, coconut cream, Glenn, Bombay,  Beverly , lemon zest.

Already have the following avocados: choquette, Simmons, oro negro

I need to find a citrus that will produce for me in south Florida, zone 10b. I try getting those cheap 1 gallon pots they sell at lowes but nothing has worked. except for calamondin.

have your red lime trees continued to produce well? I need some citrus in my yard but potted calamondins seem to be the only thing to produce.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is all citrus extinct in palm beach county?
« on: August 31, 2018, 09:27:46 PM »
I’m throwing in the towel on citrus (surprised I lasted this long) unless there’s one of you out there that will give me reason to hope. Are there any citrus varieties still producing reliably that would make growing it worthwhile?

been there. Arid place, didn't see much fruit  but, was not looking for it either. anyway, small island, just ask the locals there;  all of them either speak English or Spanish. good luck.

thanks.

are they known to grow super slow? I think I planted this almost two years ago. took a long time to germinate but, regardless it seems to be in no rush, just taking its time.

I planted 3 varieties I found at lowes, gave each one a sunny 20 foot span on clothesline & didn't expect much but now its year two and already I got a taste from two varieties, carlos , & noble; still waiting on southern home. definitely not a big crop by any means but I have been able to snack on them. I was pleasantly surprised was not expecting fruit until year 3 or 4.
