Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango leaf issue ID help
« on: July 31, 2019, 03:36:16 PM »
Hi, I have an issue with my Sweet Tart leaves. It's causing new shoots and growth to die back and turn black. Also, the newer leaves are curled and have brownish blotches all over. What's going on and how can I fix it?

Thank you

Right, I think a little stinkiness is expected, but some are just out of line. I know decent, sweet smelling jackfruits exist... I'm eating one right now lol

Hey all,

I'm looking for a variety of jackfruit with an intense, candy-sweet, melon or tropical flavor.

So far, I've had:

  • Black Gold: Very soft and fibrous. Pretty sweet but has a kind of farty aftertaste. Not my favorite.
  • Golden Nugget: Pretty good but didn't blow me away.
  • Xain (from Excalibur nursery): Really intense bubblegum flavor followed by a pure durian aftertaste. Great stuff but I'm not the biggest fan of durian.

  • Mai 1, Mai 3: Maybe I've never had a good one but I'm just not a really big fan. They haven't been strong enough in flavor for me. The texture is wonderful though.
  • Bangkok lemon: Really nice but I'm looking for more melon/tropical/bubble gum.
  • Crunchy lemon: Same as Bangkok lemon.

Color doesn't matter at all to me. For texture, anything from medium to firm is great. But I'll take exceptional flavor over exceptional texture.

Also, maybe less important here, but I'm looking for sweet-smelling varieties. Earlier today, I found an orange-fleshed jackfruit in Whole Foods that was imported from Jamaica - the flavor was more or less exactly like the aroma: sweet, fruity, and tropical. No sulfuric odors at all.

Any help is appreciated :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: M4 or Sugar loaf?

Sugarloaf is mid season and M4 is late. Consider a multigraft :)

Which has more resistance toward anthracnose?  I've heard Neelam has some resistance, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Yeah, maybe but quality of Neelam fruit tends to suck.  There are better Infian varieties to grow and better Jakarta offspring to grow.  This "poll" and comparison are like comparing apples to coffee beans..

Lmao I guess the coffee beans are Jakarta? Which Indian varieties do you prefer or recommend over Jakarta? I really like how intense it is but I did notice some ripening issues in the fruits I got and from what I'm reading, its productivity is trash. So yeah, what are some superior varieties with a similar flavor profile?

I've only had Jakarta and Neelam from this year so my frame of reference is limited. What do you think?

Ahhh thank you!

Thanks, everyone.

The gulaab jamun/ gulaab khas sounds great but I can't find a source for it in the U.S. Does anyone recommend any resources?

I think I have to try a few more Nam Doc Mais. I'm not sure that I've had a good one yet but if you've detected rose, it's back on the consideration list.

And I've been waiting to try a cotton candy for a while. Thanks for the heads up on the LZ.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fig trees
« on: July 08, 2018, 03:26:26 AM »
I'm interested in growing a fig tree in a 20 gal container here in S. FL.  I'll be following this thread looking for what variety would be best suited for my climate.

thx

Smith, Jh Adriatic, Violette de Bordeaux, and Emerald Strawberry. Hollier and Tena are also good. I used to grow over 70 varieties of fig and only about 20 are still with me. Those are my best performers so far; I'm still testing a few more.

VdB may require midday shade. Mine wilts like crazy in intense heat and direct sunlight. I remember a few growers in CA thought VdB was better suited to more mild climates.

Italian 258 has a good honey drop at the ostiole but it's really sensitive to ovetwatering and will split a week before it's ripe.

Ronde de Bordeaux ripens in June so you'll likely get to taste fruit before the rains. You must be patient and wait for it to wither slightly and turn jammy to get the full flavor. This applies to all figs but especially RDB.

Brown Turkey, Texas Blue Giant, and all of its other cousins just really have underperformed for me. TBG is only slightly better than BT but they're generally not really respected by many fig enthusiasts, even under ideal growing conditions. Something to think about.

Hey all,

I'm here in Miami in the middle of mango season and after tasting my first Edward and E-4, I can already feel an obsession brewing.

Right now I have only baby trees of Edward, Angie, Orange Sherbet, and Fruit Punch. I don't have a ton of room left so I've got to be wise about any more additions. I understand SweetTart and Lemon Zest are forum favorites so I'm gonna have to give those a try. Any other favorites you think I should consider?

Also, this is a long shot but I love the flavor of rose: Rose water, Brewster lychee, rose apple - all of it. Are there any mangoes that have a hint of rose in the flavor profile?

Thanks for reading
