Black Sapote ‘Matt Snow’ - what’s the story?
« on: December 12, 2020, 01:22:16 PM »
I made an impulse buy a couple month’s ago: black Sapote Matt Snow.

Just now looking it up and not finding any good info on it. Anyone got details? Its history, care, flavor? (other than that it was maybe grown in Miami by the Rare Fruit club president?)

I bet it is renamed and a pic would give us a shot at identifying it. Black Snow would have been a good name but if it were yellow snow I wouldn't eat it.

It’s the Rare Fruit Council International headquartered in Miami, Florida. They are not a chapter but rather the charter of the organization.

Without sharing superfluous info the non misnomer name is

‘Matt’s Giant’

not whatever the eBay seller is selling it as. These probably come from Pine Island originally. That’s how the misnomer occurred. As it so frequently occurs with misnomers and swip swapping of names. A cultivar named after your first and last name is just lame IMO lol.

If the fruit are a little flattened and disc like, even with 5 indistinct edges and with a name like giant it could be a mayer derivative.

Here are a couple photos... I think I'm mostly worried I got a blander version of an already bland fruit. I only got so much space! :)

That’s probably a Pine Island tag... you definitely probably overpaid for it. Any cultivar name that is someone‘s first and last name is concerning and pretty lame.

I recently purchased this variety.. and couldn't find anything about it.. so I called Matt Snow.

Here's the scoop. He gave a scion to PIN for them to propegate. He wanted it to be called "el grande" but they forgot the name he wanted so they just called it " Matt Snow". Apparently its a huge fruit, little seeds and great eating. Here are pics Matt sent me.

Seanyk is correct. I’m not a black sapote expert but it is the best black sapote I’ve had. I’ve never tasted a black sapote with a strong intense flavor. This is the least bland and also has a great marshmallow/fluffy consistency.

Well, that's promising!

Now I just have to see how this tree does in the nasty hot Sonoran Desert for me!

The proof'll be in the black pudding! hardy har har!
