I have a friend that did the same thing with the store bought fruit and the graft took. I’m sure there are many people with the giant yellows now. Brads got multiple selections of the giant yellow at his orchard, hopefully they will fruit next year.

I grafted successfully a Palora stem from a fruit bought in the supermarket in April. Unfortunately I was working away this summer and the person in care of the plant didn't eliminate the flushes under the graft but the graft is alive and I hope it will push soon. I used the 'plug' grafting but the one used by the guy in the video seems easier with such small pieces (mine is even smaller than the ones he got). I'll try it next spring. A pic of the graft today:
