I have a 4 years in the ground Chislett navel orange.  This is the second year it's set fruit and it's already very good.  It's tastier than Washington and almost as good as Cara Cara.

It might be the best late navel variety according the UC research.  Much later season than the popular Lane Late navel and less granulation problems.  My experience is it's tastier and more productive than Frost Washington navel.  Also it's juice won't turn bitter like Washington due to lower limonin!  The only drawback like Cara Cara is that it's harder to peel.

Too bad some nursery bought the exclusive rights to it in the US, so CCPP can't offer it's budwood anymore.  Does anyone know if these rights expire?  If so, When?

Has anyone tried the patented Kinnow LS and Fairchild LS mandarin varieties?  They were available from CCPP for a short time years ago.  According to google patent search, their patents expire around 2030.  I was lucky to get Daisy Seedless wood from CCPP before they sold the license.  It is excellent and very low seeded.

I have Daisy low seed version.

Citrus General Discussion / Very puffy Kishu mandarins
« on: December 29, 2023, 12:27:03 AM »
Does anyone have super puffy Kishu fruit with lots of air inside?
My Kishu fruits don't look much like normal Kishu pics on google.
The one in the pic is better than most.
Could it be due to Phoenix climate or rootstock?

Citrus General Discussion / Is this a Wekiwa or did CCPP screw me over?
« on: December 29, 2023, 12:19:29 AM »
Does this look like a huge dry granulated Wekiwa or did CCPP give me the wrong budwood?
It's next to a Salustiana orange and Kishu mandarin both are very good.
All my other varieties on the same rootstock growing in the same area did not have granulation problems.

Citrus General Discussion / Tarocco#7 same as Tarocco or not?
« on: December 28, 2023, 11:23:26 PM »
When you buy a Tarocco blood orange tree from a nursery is it likely to be a Tarocco#7 or some older standard Tarocco variety that's been around the citrus industry?
If they're different is the Tarocco#7 better?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Loquats that can survive the desert heat
« on: February 08, 2023, 08:13:31 PM »
Hi all, I grow loquats in Phoenix.  I've had many loquat trees die in the summer.
Selecting the right varieties is most important.  Some varieties are much more heat tolerant than others.
Generally speaking orange flesh varieties are hardier than yellow flesh and white flesh is the weakest.
But flesh color does not guarantee heat tolerance.
Big Jim, McBeth, Argelino, Kanko can take full sun in a cool spot in my yard after one year in ground.
Novak, Bradenton, Tanaka need afternoon shade.
Christmas, Champagne, Ed's Delight need shade from late morning.
Vista White needs shade all day long.
Loquats need water everyday in the summer until established, then every two or three days and water deeply.
Finally, loquats from cuttings are weaker than grafted trees with a tap root.

What other varieties and tips would you recommend?

Has anyone grown or tasted these oranges?  How good are they?
I found bits of info on fruitmentor, UCR and other sites, but I would like to hear first hand experiences.

10
My Redlands is very vigorous has huge leaves twice the size of all my California white sapote varieties.
Which makes me wonder if the tree is also much bigger than other varieties.
If so then I have to reconsider it's location.

11
My 15ft tall Panama Berry was killed to the ground by a 26F freeze.  Will it regrow from the roots?
If not I will need to replace it because it is used for providing afternoon shade and humidity for other trees in the Phoenix summer.

12
Do you like Bell, B10 or Sri Kembangan starfruit better?
I only have space for one of these.  I like starfruit that has some flavor and sweetness.
Sri Kembangan is good, but Kari is too soft for me.
I've not tried Bell or B-10.

Read on a couple websites that pink guavas might be slightly more cold hardy than white guavas.  Can anyone confirm or refute this?

I'm also curious about the white Cuban guava that Toptopicals and some nurseries sell.  Does it taste good? How does it compare to other guavas?

I've bought other guavas from toptrop:
Peruvian - sweet soft mediun size fruit, lacks acidity, low seed count, very productive
Barbie Pink - low on flavor and sweetness(probably should have gotten the Ruby Supreme)
Tikal - very productive, low on flavor and sweetness

Mexican Cream - strong sweet smell and taste, small soft fruit, not productive at all.  They seem to like it more in CA where it's cooler.  Maybe Mexican Cream doesn't need as much heat to sweeten up.
White guava from Exotica Nursery in Ca - Steve told me it's seedless and productive, but it turned out to be seeded.  He told me later his guavas are seedlings.  At first I was disappointed until the 3rd year when the large white guavas on this tree became super sweet with some tartness too.  They are super flavorful even when they are still crunchy.  Best damn guava I've ever had is what most people say when they try it.  I'm not sure how much the desert heat and sun here in Phoenix has to do with the fruit quality.  I might be ordinary grown elsewhere.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lucuma grafted on Canistel
« on: January 14, 2019, 03:57:35 PM »
Hi All,
Is Lucuma compatible with Canistel rootstock long term?
Does anyone know of a healthy Lucuma on Canistel rootstock?
Canistel can grow in a large container here in Phoenix, AZ, but Lucumas die for some reason.
Lucumas die even before it gets hot.  It might be the very hard water or some public water chemical or something.
Using a tougher rootstock makes more sense than trying to use filtered water.

Thank you for any info,
Steve

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Luc's Mexican Mangosteen grafted on Imbe
« on: January 14, 2019, 03:45:26 PM »
Hi All,
Is Luc's Mexican Garcinia compatible with Imbe rootstock long term?
Does anyone know of a healthy Luc's Mexican Garcinia on Imbe rootstock?

I have two 10ft tall Imbes in the ground that still haven't flowered.  How long do Imbes take to flower?
So I'm thinking of grafting Luc's Garcinia to them.
I have a 3 year old Luc's seedling that's 10" tall, no kidding.  They grow so slowly here in Phoenix, AZ.
Imbe is the only garcinia that I know of that grows well in our 8+pH clay soil and take the Phoenix sun and summer heat.
It's also cold hardy down to 25 degrees.
If they are compatible long term, then Luc's would probably be better off on Imbe rootstock than on it's own roots.

Thanks for any info.

Is it possible to graft Cherry of the Rio Grande to Surinam Cherry rootstock?
Has this been done?
I'm curious because Surinam Cherry grows okay in our crappy calcareous Arizona soil.  Other Eugenias can't grow here without tons of compost or sulfur.
Also Surinam Cherry is one of the most widely available Eugenia seedlings in the USA.

There's a lot of mango scion exchanging and mango grafting going on around here :)
What is your experience with storing mango scions?
I got kids and work and sometimes can't graft my scion promptly after receiving them in the mail.
I store citrus and other hardier scions in the refer for a while to extend their viability, but can mango scions store in the 35F to 39F degree range?

I received some nice mango scions from Oscar that took and stored the extra in the fridge for 2 weeks before I also grafted the extra.
The extra still looked green and fresh inside and out after 2 weeks in the fridge, but none of them took.
Maybe they were too cold or maybe they were just too old.  If it's too cold, then would 45F or 50F be ok?
Please share your experience!

Thanks,
Steve

Hi All,

Short story is I'm looking for a CDD Blanc plant and have many fruit tree scions for exchange.

The long story is I got a CDD Gris three years ago and now know that it's not a good choice for Phoenix AZ due to the eye being open. I did my research before and read somewhere that CDD Gris has a closed eye so I went with the Gris. Wrong, it has an open eye here in Phoenix that allows the sour fruit beetle in. These pests don't spare any figs

I should have figured this out a year ago had I not planted the CDD Gris near a large eucalyptus tree. Well I found out figs can't tolerate eucalyptus like the white mulberry can and had to replant it elsewhere. I figured fig and mulberry are related and both have aggressive root systems, so why not. The CDD Gris and a Janice Seedless were totally stunted next to the eucalyptus tree, but grew well after moving them away.

If you want Tanaka, Champagne or Bradenton Loquat scion wood please message me.
Many people think Tanaka is the best loquat in Hawaii, Bradenton is the best loquat in Florida and Champagne is one of the best loquats anywhere.

I just want a grafted McBeth loquat scion wood in exchange.
I also have a grafted Tanaka and a grafted Champagne trees in exchange for a grafted MacBeth tree.

Thanks

Here is a discussion I had with someone who is knowledgeable about citrus and citrus relatives.

It started with matievski stating that Glycosmis pentaphilla (aka Orangeberry, Rum Berry, ginberry, G.citrifolia, G.trifoliata) being an excellent rootstock for all citrus plants if you have soils with PH 8 and higher. Tolerates salinity of the soils.

The first message is at the bottom and the last message is at the top.

Dear matievski,

It looks like wampee and orangeberry are in the clauseneae tribe.  Where cirtus and Severinia are in the citreae tribe.  So wampee should be more graft compatible with orangeberry than the others.  I can send you a wampee scion if my grafting succeeds.

Thanks,

- snowjunky99

Dear snowjunky99,

Wampee is an interesting citrus family plant. Let me know if you have one for sale or for exchange, I would love to have one.
I do have Severinia boxifolia if you want to give it a try as a rootstock for Wampee.
Have you tried trifoliate orange?

Dear matievski,

We have high soil ph here in Phoenix too, but the citrus grow well on sour orange rootstock. Wampee (clausena lansium) on the other hand doesn't grow well here and doesn't graft well on citrus, so I will try to graft wampee on it. I think clausena and glycosmis are closer relatives than they are to citrus. Please let me know if you have a bigger one for grafting. Thanks.

Dear snowjunky99,

It is known fact that it is resistant rootstock for citruses. In south hemisphere it is most used rootstock due to tolerance of the soils with PH > 8.
they go vice-verse, I have mine grafted on lemon Myer for 3 years now. Fruiting constantly.

Dear matievski,

Thanks for the first one arriving in good shape. How do you know citrus will graft onto these? Did you read it somewhere or tried it yourself? Please point me to that information. Thanks. I'm not buying these for grafting, but will try it if true.
