Yangmei / Myrica rubra is available in San Francisco
« on: June 20, 2020, 02:25:28 PM »
For the first time, I bought fresh Yangmei from US market.

That is the thing I missed most for the past decade. I was only able to make it back to China one time in season for Yangmei in past 13 years.

Finally it is here. It is $50/lb this year, hopefully it will go down every year after.

I am saving all the seeds to see how much seedling can I have next year. Will start the germination next spring :). (germination rate is the highest at the 2nd year).

availability is very limited at Bi-rite Market San Francisco.

Flavor wise is complex, this variety is close to a combination of blackberry and a little bit of strawberry.
It's texture is hard to describe by words. Take a look at the first picture and image each spike like straw is full of juice. :)

This is Biji variety.

for 1lb, I got 44 purple pearl. yes, I counted :p.

The dongkui/east giant variety is much bigger. probably 20 fruit/lb.
