Anonna Pollination
« on: January 07, 2013, 11:03:42 PM »
While visiting some in laws this weekend, I noticed their Anonna reticulata tree was full of fruit, and knowing how difficult it is for them to pollinate , I wondered what would cause this.

I noticed that right next to this tree he had a A. muricata.

So my question is,  can a Guanabana tree pollinate a custard apple ? or are they naturally productive like that?

Well fertilized Annona reticulata, visited by sufficient numbers of Nitidulid beetles and enough rain, are naturally productive.

I would consider a Soursop/Custard-Apple hybrid to be an intergeneric hybrid, which I tried many times to achieve and never got any.

 Har,

Do you know of any crosses involving A. muricata?
Does it cross with A. montana?

maybe the tree is fertilized and in full sun?
you should probably propagate that tree for yourself because i have seen many custard apples trees around here and they have just a few to no fruit... i was at some land the other day that i may buy with my brother and the place is full of both soursop and custard apple trees...the soursop trees had fruit but don't remember a single mamon.

Muricata can cross with montana, but I don't know if the hybrids are viable.  I had a tray full of seeds sprout just fine, but none of the plants survived the neglectful conditions sitting on the ground in my back yard, with sporadic hand watering.  I have never heard of a fruiting trees.

Yeah that's what I thought, I always hear complaint by people here in the DR that their Anona or Mamon hardly ever have any fruit, some said they even cut the tree down because of that.  so I was surprised to see this tree so full of fruit,  he doesn't fertilize, prune or anything. although the soil is pretty good there.  not a young tree, its big.

Higher yields and well formed fruits are obtained by hand pollination.

Excellent video on hand pollination! Thanks for posting. Those Colombians are the fruit experts of South America. A few fruiter friends of mine have traveled there have told me that Colombia has the best fruits in all of Latin America!

You're most welcome, FloridaGreenMan :) We usually receive fruits from Colombia like Granadilla, Yellow Pitaya and Curuba...etc. They are always top notch and i'm never disapointed with the quality and freshness of them fruits. At the moment the markets are bursting by the seams with Granadilla 8)
