That's just about the size of mine, slightly over 3" diameter.

By the way, baseball size is 3" or just under. So these are bigger than baseballs!  8)

Jaime

Yeah, they are pretty large.  Chainsaw bar is getting oiled up though- I'm still not impressed with the fruit quality/tree size .

Have you been fertilizing it? That might improve flavor. You might also consider grafting on some choice types rather than cutting whole tree down.

Oscar- no, actually have not fertilized it at all. I wasn't aware that nitrogen would help fruit quality.  It is right next to a Haden mango tree, so I avoid fertilizer in that area.  It is way too large for foliar applications.  Maybe I'll give it some fert after mango season and give it one more year....

I have seem them holding fruit in pots at Lara farms, but I think they would out grow pots quickly.

Yes fert. will improve flavor. You can give it PK fertilizer, withould N, and also trace elements and the mango will like it also.

Clint I have an Oscar three year old Pink Caimito  seedling, a kissing cousin laying around here ready to joint your backyard.  Oscar told me this would give us a better flavor profile than the True Caimito we are currently growing because of cold weather during the fruit developing & ripening, the Pink caimito should have better flavor profile.  Perhaps you can cross the Sleepdoc caimito to Oscar Pink Caimito and see what you can get! I should get Oscar Giant Caimito shipment coming in soon. So you welcome to a seedling from that for future trade on Clint Red Blood No Fuss Jackfruit variety in development.  I have the Orange Snob No latex Jack seedling for you; have Seadation stop over and pick it up before I fly to Seattle for a month in May.  With rainy season coming up & the day lenght are longer they start waking up & shooting out new leaves should be in ground soon!😄

Sounds great Jack !   I have a nice spot ready for the BOS.  I'll see if I can get Seadation to stop by.

is there much variance in quality of fruit from seed with camito? Or is it a safe bet to grow from seed. Also interested how greens compare to purples.

The biggest concern i would have with seedling grown trees would be self-incompatibility.
If you plan on having a few trees or live in an area that has others it should be a problem though

Most people i know who even grow starpples plant the seeds from their countries of origin and have beautiful, healthy, and fruitless trees.
I get a lot of questions and comments (and theft) from fellow West Indians when they see the fruiting purple one (Haitian Star?) in my front yard.

They grow true alright, Some types can reach 2 lbs but usually a lot smaller. Oscar's big purple may be larger. Big ones usually taste better plain greens are some of the best and worst but I think the pinks taste a bit better. The tree that produced the fruit in the pix grows in a pot is self fertile and just the same as its alva variety. mother. I remember the tree when it was just a seed.

While the size is impressive, I am in awe of that color, Mike T!. Nice looking caimito.

Well if we take this back to original question, I simply wanted to know what the normal caimito fruit size was in South Florida. I never thought mine was huge. I just needed a frame of reference.

Oscar, the fruit in your pic does look bigger than mine, which I measured at about 3" diameter.

Jaime

Looks about the size of the one I ate at Fruit & Spice Park yesterday.  That’s the first one I’ve ever had, I’m not certain if I snapped a photo of the plant ID or if it was a named variety or not anymore, I was kinda on my way out and super stoked to have spotted a single decent fallen caimito.  This one to me wasn’t strong on flavor front, but didn’t have much latex and was pleasant texture and sweetness, so I couldn’t complain, it was pretty good, and again, it’s the only one I’ve ever had, so I was kinda just stoked to have found it.

Where would I even find these fruits for sale?  Would def like to try more, that pink one Mike T posted, holy moly, I had only ever heard of the green or red, suckers look huge as well.
