Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dwarf Guaya from Raul (M.oliviformis)

Got some dwarf guaya seeds (Meliccocu oliviformis I tink) a few years ago and that is his picture above. I planted 3 and one was a casualty that never recovered from a goose incident, one is now 10 feet high and the other is 15 feet. I gave a runt to a friend who grew it in a pot and it is around 4 ft high now. My large flourishing trees are yet to flower but the small pottd one my friend ha is busting out in bloom.

These are up there on my want list!
Aren't they dioecious ??....or are there bisexual varieties?
Interested to hear if your friends plant bears fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Longan fertilsing and watering

I kept getting allot of small fruit on my trees.
I was showed that the branches frequently have 3 pannicles of flowers per branch and when the
fruit is small cut 2 pannicles off and leave one pannicle per branch.
I wouldn't be concerned with fertilizing now but water is really important
It was not easy to cut off 2 pannicles and leave one but the fruit size was
really nice this year.
I have seen very large trees that were loaded with large fruit that were
not getting extra water. Eventually in Florida the tree's roots find water
Thank you for the advice. The tree fruited last season...with only some small fruit. I'll trim the pannicles as you suggest and pump in plenty of water.
Cheers

I have a small longan tree(Chompoo marcott) that is flowering (Early spring).
Should I be fertilising and pumping the water into it now or wait until fruit develops first?

Do grafted/seedling types of these garcinias affect time to fruit and/or fruit size?
IDK anwer to your question. I would suspect fruiting would be faster from grafted trees. But grafting would have additional advantage of selecting for good types. It seems there is quite a bit of variation from different mother trees in the wild, as to size, shape, and even exterior color. Also some may be dioecious and others not. And some may be light producers and others heavy producers.
I reckon you're correct...selected grafts can improve taste and should bear earlier, although I wonder if grafting affects fruit size like in other Garcinias?
I found this from https://www.agrifutures.com.au/farm-diversity/mangosteen/ regarding farm plantings of G .mangostana -
"Grafted trees are occasionally produced, but although they are reported to be earlier bearing, the trees are small and produce smaller fruit compared to seedling trees. Grafted trees are rarely used for commercial production due to their low vigour, but are ideal for backyard production."

Can anyone report if fruit size is smaller on grafted Lucs?
