why are cherimoya seeds rotting
« on: December 06, 2020, 12:31:37 AM »
My cherimoya seeds have been in a pot and they've rotted over the course of 1 month. someone online said there could be microscopic insects goign in adn spoiling them, and i think that's the case. i have seeds i saved just in case. i know they are viable to about 2-3 yrs if theyre kept dry and they have. how long do they take to sprout if kept for 1 month?
Cheers!

I dont know, sometimes it takes months to sprout.  I use a super well draining cactus mix to start them and use 1 year old seeds that have dried out well.

Your greenhouse temps are in the 40’s at night unless you have a heat source.
Try germinating all your sub tropical seeds on a heat mat in winter.

Regardless of the temperature, the seeds should not get soft and rotten unless the soil is overly wet and anaerobic.  Thats why I asked for a pic of the dirt.  The composition of the soil being used does matter.  You want something that breathes easy and wont become anaerobic.

I sprout my seeds in the greenhouse and its cold into the 40s at night also.  Doesn't seem to matter, the heat during the day is enough to make them sprout with almost 100% success.  Sometime s they do take a while but eventually all will sprout.

Heres a pic of what my dirt looks like.  These have cherimoya seeds in them.  They are outside right now, not even in the GH yet.  They will go in the GH soon though.  Each pot gets 2 seeds and the weaker seedling gets yanked.

wow, it looks a lot more similar to mine than i thought... mine is just lke your, only the woodchips are slightly smaller... also planted rollinia seeds, those should be fine but will soursop seeds sprout bucause since they're cold sensitive, i hope they will but they might not.

If your trying to pop rollinia and soursop in winter you may want to pony up a little bit for a cheap or free  seedling heat mat, it will help germinating everything.
