low-ph tropicals - other than miracle berry?
« on: April 04, 2021, 01:44:30 PM »
I was just doing ph testing on my greenhouse and container soils and am wondering if anything other than miracle berry needs a low ph?  That is, below 6 or so.  Tropicals and sub-tropicals, I'm not talking about blueberries and such.

I can only add carambola to your list, a quick search showed that it prefers a ph of 5.5 -6.5 .

Thanks, I'll toss a bit of sulphur in that one too.

Coffee
Miracle fruit is very sensitive to salts, including too much added S

Basically everything I own responds well to being a little on the acidic side.

All eugenia
All plinia / jaboticaba
Starfruit
Guava
etc

If you're in California your water and soil is probably alkaline. It's not say it won't survive well, but it can do with a little more acidity usually.

carambola (Kari) does extremely well in our alkaline limestone soil

What's "a little on the acidic side" though?  6.5?

Most of my container plants are around 6.5 because of the peat in the mixture and the slightly acid fertilizer.  I'm wondering what is worth adding sulfur to.

What is your water PH out of the hose? That will answer a lot of questions.

I think it was almost exactly 7.0 when I tested it.  City water, fairly low TDS.

Wow, I could only wish! Just a little acidifier on everything will do it well... Save for figs. I think that's the only fruit tree I know that prefers basic soil.

All my sub tropicals prefer it more on the sour side, but not too far. They'll visibly complain about it being too sour.
