K-Rimes,

Looking good so far. Hopefully this one makes it. Did you leave any supporting leaves to keep the branches alive?

Simon

I left a good amount of branches on a few parts of the tree. They are certainly growing way stronger than the grafts are, but I am willing to leave them be for awhile while the grafts get some weight to them. On the last californica that died on me, I removed all the lower growth once I had some weight on the crystal graft, but I suppose maybe not enough?

I'll leave some nurse branches on there for much longer this time.

I do think that this californica, being in part shade, will live a happier life than the last one.

Are you experimenting on any other rootstocks? My grafted M. californica looks a little chlorotic compared to my pensylvanica plants. I'm growing out some cerifera to experiment with as well.

Hi, I’m interested in scions. I sent a PM earlier. Thanks

Hi, I didn’t receive a message from you, sorry. I have sold the rest of my plants and my trees are actively pushing new growth and flowering now, so no more scions for the time being.

3
I found some scions locally. Thanks!

I’ve eaten Emerich #1 before. I thought it was interesting, and some of the fruit was good, but not great.

4
How are your plants doing? Any fruit yet?

5
After several years of flower and no fruit, I’m going to say it’s very likely not self fertile, and requires a pollinator. If anyone has scions of another selection, I’d be interested in scions.

How long does it take to grow cherimoya from seed to fruit? Did anyone try it and how's its fruit quality?
Any suggestions for good variety to grow from seeds?

Under good conditions, I've had them flower at 3-4 years. I've heard a few folks speculate that seedlings' fruit improve as the tree matures, and not to give up on them if they're a little bland the first few years it fruits.

In regards to the original question, Pierce cherimoya has been my favorite so far (California, 9b). It has a great, sweet, complex pineapple flavor. Honeyhart grown at a friend's place (also 9b) has also been very good. Cherimoyas multigraft easily, so getting started with a seedling or grafted plant, then multigrafting  when it's about 3-4' tall is an easy way to taste a bunch of varieties and choose you own favorite.

Just dug up some seedlings to transplant them to a wider spacing. I had about 10 seedlings i planted at 6' apart, lost 3 but the 7 have been growing incredibly fast.  After seeing people talk about them being huge i wanted to make my spacing more in line with the rest of my yangmei block, about 10' spacing. Not very many roots in the top 6-8" of soil and lots of large roots with fibrous roots coming straight down off the bottom of the plant. We'll see how they recover. Plants are about 2.5-3' tall. Was fun to do in terms of learning what their roots are like. Very little gopher activity around these lower roots.

This is great! Thanks for sharing Nate! I never would have guessed their roots would look like that. Seems like they'd be really drought tolerant with roots like that. It will be interesting to hear how those do compared to grafted plants on other species.

You didn't get the Himalayan Taiwanese Long cuttings yet? Go to Marta's website she still has that one for sale now. I'm grafting it now, I have all the long red Himilayans on my tree. When my FSP grafts grows more next year, I can sell you a few cuttings.

https://reallygoodplants.com/

Haha… Not yet. I keep telling myself I’m done trialing mulberries, but here I am! Haha… Let me know when you have cuttings. I’d love to grab a couple.

9
Happy to pay, or if you’d like to trade, I have many other things growing in the nursery. If you’re interested in mulberries specifically, I have Skinner, DMOR9, Persian, Black Beauty, Bulukly, Pakistan, Kokusa, Red Himalayan, Shahtoot/white Pakistan, and a couple others I’m forgetting at the moment. Thanks!

I was unsuccessful sending a PM but I am interested in 1G plant and scion for Green gold.  I am also located in Santa Cruz, and I can pick up.  Please PM me with info.  Thank you!

PM sent. Since you’re local, I sent you some of the varieties I have in 5g as well.

Do folks have experience growing velvet tamarind outside of its native range? Has anyone made observations of their plant after experiencing a frost? I have a few seedlings that have been growing steadily in my passive greenhouse in Santa Cruz CA 9b. Our winter was so mild this year, they have had zero damage. Most sources list them as tropical. Thanks for any info!

That's a nice looking frut. So the brown spot/marks on the outside of the fruit means it is very sweet, didn't know that.

None of my fruits had any marks on the skin like yours. Can you take a brix reading, I'm just curious how much sweeter it will be when the fruit looks like that. If you don't have a Refractometer, I have an analog one I use so send me half a fruit and I can do the brix reading for you.

I don't think it has much to do with how sweet they are. I can take a brix reading for you though on my next fruit. Sometimes the skin gets sugar spots on it that makes the skin sort of crispy. It might have more to do with sun exposure than sugar content. I've had fruit without spots that was just as sweet.

This is fruit from a plant gifted to me without a label. The person who gave it to me said it was likely McDill, Vernon, or Malibu #3. From the fruit I've tasted, I think McDill can be ruled out. This fruit is much better than the McDill fruit I've tasted. Its fruit is variable in size, and it's excellent tasting. No bitterness, with crisp sugary skin. The bottom point of the fruit is typically off center. Anyone want to weigh in?

How did the Walton taste?

What happened to the outside skin with the markings?

This was my first taste of Walton, and I only had two fruits to try. I should have several dozen to compare in about 6-8 months. The tree is loaded with small fruits right now. The tree is about 5 years old.

These first two fruits were excellent. The custard flavor was more pronounced in these fruits compared to others I’ve had, mixed with the usual white sapote flavors. The fruits were on the brighter flavor profile side, which I think some folks compare to citrus notes. The skin had some russeting, which seemed to be from a concentration of sugars near the skin, resulting in a sort of crunchy, sweet skin. The skin was a little thick/tough due to the russeting, and I didn’t find it appealing to eat. There was no bitterness in any parts of the fruit. I think it’s one of the better cultivars I’ve tried, but most white sapotes taste that way when I’m eating them! 😂

Reeed, so how was the taste of your cocktail this year? I just picked the last fruits from the tree before the gardner got them.

I thought cocktail grapefruif/pomelo tasted better than the Valentine, but others that I gave both fruits like the Valentine more. I like the sweet with a little tart, the Valentine has no tartness.

Mine have been outstanding this year. Like a sweet mandarin flavored grapefruit, with some other aromatics in the mix. I'm not sure I can rank Cocktail, Valentine, and Tahitian as a favorite. I think they're all excellent and worthy of a space in the garden. So for, my Cocktail tree does seem to be much more productive than the others, but my trees are still young. The fruit pictured below was seedless. I think I'll get an insect net to prevent pollination. The seediness is the only drawback to Cocktail in my opinion.

Thats the impression im getting too, with the boosting in cold weather and being stressed in the hottest times of the year.  I sold some to a guy who lives in the redwoods, an old clear cut that is second growth forest, and he has very rich soil. The plants are doing pretty amazing for him and he has multiple seedlings flowering. I think he'll probably be one of the first to fruit it in California. Seems like they enjoy the low intensity light up at his spot.  Wish I had more of that around my area.

I just visited his garden and his plants look better than ever. I don't think they recieve any direct sunlight. I can't figure out why mine languish so much. I probably am not getting them enough water.

Blenheim is listed at 400 chill hours, and is still my favorite. On the negative side, it is not the most disease resistant, and alternate bears. Flavor Delight and Cotton Candy apriums are pretty good, and are very early, which is fun.

I have some seedlings growing in a passive greenhouse. I agree, that the fruit is really fun and tasty. I doubt they'll survive outdoors in my climate (CA 9b), but if someone has heard otherwise, I'm eager to believe! Haha... These plants are from seeds from a fruit tasting Bush2Beach hosted.

Reedo, nice looking Walton. How was the taste of your fruits? I haven't tasted the Walton yet.

They still haven’t ripened. I’ll post a review when I taste them. The tree has been setting fruiting nonstop for months. Looks like I a long harvest season this year.

Soooo… tell me about why this giant tree in my yard has you all excited

Due to the citrus quarantine, and the fact that the CCPP doesn't offer budwood, it's impossible to source legally in California. The fruit I've tasted at CRFG events was excellent, and definitely worth introducing at the CCPP, but the process is expensive. It's currently not on their "Upcoming" varieties list.  https://ccppdms.ucr.edu/ccppdms/upcoming_varieties

In addition to the farmers market fruit that Bush2Beach referenced, the closest store I've found them at is Steve's Philipino Market in Marina. I'd call ahead. Their produce quality varies dramatically. 3056 Del Monte Rd Marina, CA 93933

You can find them at Casadores in Watsonville sometimes, but the price is usually really high, and the fruit quality is meh.

I've ordered fruit from Rincon Tropics, and the quality was great. https://www.rincontropics.com/shop/

I'm planning a trip to ecuador next month. Plane tickets are high right now I payed 850$. 4x4 car rental at least 800 plus gas. Hotels are cheap around 20-30$ per night. Food maybe 30$ a day. I will stay for a month and likely dip into peru and colombia. I want to see the yasuni national forest. It's considered the most biodiverse place on the planet. There's a lot to see.

Sounds epic! We'll look forward to hearing about your journey!
