Tropical Fruit Discussion / So Dry...Where's the rain?!
« on: November 16, 2023, 10:34:36 AM »
If you don't know, my area is in a huge drought...
In the last 70+ days, we've only gotten 0.42 inches of rain...
That's only 0.16 more inches than what Death Valley Got during the same time period.
The plants are so sad lol.
How is everyone else doing?
When researching land in FL, I heard that some places don't get much rain during the winter at all either.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Free Yangmei Giveaway FINISHED
« on: November 06, 2023, 06:01:20 PM »
Hey all, I figured it's time for another giveaway.
I don't want my rose red yangmei.
It's another rare one from overseas...But, I am fairly certain it has RKN.
I will prune it back and ship you the plant (Scions are for my friend).
But I don't want to sell something defective.Well it's not defective. But why buy something with RKN?
So I was thinking on how I could structure a giveaway. I was thinking I'd post a math problem and say first one to solve it gets the tree. But nowadays, you can just googles the problem and get an answer. No fun. And you guys have already guessed my ACT scores from last time ;D . After some thinking how about you guys try to guess the number of jaboticaba varieties that I have.
There we go.
You are allowed 2 guesses per forum member. Guessing ends on 11/10.
You must guess the exact number in order to win. If no one guesses it, I will keep the tree. But if no one guesses the exact number, I will send the person who got the closest a tree or rare jabo scion of their choice.
It's 100% free. No shipping fees you need to pay.

Have fun! Also quick life update - next semester I will be taking soil science. Pretty excited for the class.

29
I would love to get this plant.
I can trade my rose red yangmei (probably has RKN though) for one or two nice sized Araza.
Best,
Ryan

30
Guys I need to sell these...for some circumstances have popped up in my life, I need to sell a few ;D
Tray of oblongatas. $5 each if you buy all 40 or so.

Rose Red Yangmei. As this one came from overseas, I believe it to have RKN. I think maybe 20 trees max made it in the US, and this is still super duper rare.
$200.

Roxa pulpa grafted. $120

Variegated coronata Jaboticaba. $125

big rooted scarlet cuttings. These are from mature trees and will fruit within a year. Huge caliper and very tall and nice size.

$100 plus $30 shipping. Will refund if shipping is cheaper.

Shipping is not included.
Best,
Ryan

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Mangosteen and M. Kakui Seeds for Sale
« on: September 18, 2023, 06:50:51 PM »
Got some mangosteen and Manilkara kakui Seeds for sale.
$6 each mangosteen
$4 each m. kakui.

36

So, I ended up buying this one last summer on a whim. I never have tasted this one before, and just got it off recommendations. But, after researching it, I don't think it'll suit my taste?
Isn't this one a bit spicy (not a fan of spice lol)? It's an early season mango...But early season is not beneficial for me anyways as I'm in TN.
So, If anyone wants to trade for another mango, or some other stuff, or buy this I'm totally down for it.
Rootstock is turpentine like all South FL tree origins.
If I did sell it, I'd semi-bare root the tree and send it to you like that. Price I would ask is $55 shipped anywhere in the US.
Thank you!
For mangos I'm looking for
lemon zest
bombay
anderson
coconut cream
etc (any classic flavor, indochinese, or citrus I don't have).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedless Mango

Mallika from my tree decided to be seedless. Paper thin seed. What are the odds?

I need to get rid of bulk amounts of white sapote scions ASAP
Got probably around 25 scions mary lane from Mark Lee
And 25 for Redlands variety. Give or take a few.
If anyone wants all,
you got it for $100 lol.
But yeah $2.50 each scion minimum 10 please.
Shipping is $6.
When you pm me, please include your address straight away. Or else I don't know where to send them :-[. I'm working on fixing the website so it will be easier for you customers also. Thank you for understanding.
Hurry before I trash them.
If you don't get your order before tomorrow night 9pm eastern, they will be all gone.
No exceptions.
I don't have space in my greenhouse for this fruit, so it's going bye bye.
Just not a fan of it, but you know, if I had a yard where I could plant it, then I would grow it, but in my greenhouse, no room :-\ :-\ :-\

41
Your boy Jabo45 is back with some cool stuff. On to the shine muscat... I should have more this fall, but not this size. So I want to sell this, erm, but how can I be fair when over 20 people have asked me for this plant :-[ ? How about an auction! That way, if you see it, you can get it (unlike just the first person to respond to this post to claim it, now everyone has a chance to get it who wants it :) .

So here's the rules of the auction. Bids are to be placed in the comment section here. Just post how much you will buy it...At the end, the highest bidder wins.
There is a set time to bid, after the time ends, winner is announced.
Bidding starts at $0.01. Shipping price is NOT included (add $20 to winning price for total price to pay).
So this is a cool way for people to get a chance for this plant, and maybe get it for a killer cheap price? Who knows?
The auction starts today, and will end on the 20th at 10pm eastern time.

Ok, now about a description of shine muscat...there's a thread going on somewhere here too, so read that if you like.
But shine muscat is good. By far the best grape I've had. And also talking to some connections out of USA they say it is the best hands down out of all the other Asian grapes.
Caveat though as it is an art growing the grapes, as they are bagged by hand, thinned by hand, and need gibberellic acid to keep them seedless. So, you grow them here like a normal grape, and they may not be the same. Taste may be similar, but without extra practices, they should have seeds and smaller fruits.
Think of it as a crunchy green table grape crossed with a muscat. Still got those nice crunchy table grape specs, but also comes with the nice muscat flavor so many people enjoy.
This is a fast grower, and is ready to be planted this fall or next spring depending on where you live.

I've sent these all over the US for trialing purposes. Some went all the way down to South FL, others in CA (I think they will do wonderfully there), some to Texas, and several other states covering a wide range of climates and growing zones. I will continue to update you on how they do.

Here's a picture of the fruits, and the plant I'm selling.

As you can see, when properly grown, these grapes get big.

Plant that is being auctioned, with red pepper for scale.

New growth on the plant being auctioned

Plant that is being auctioned, with chicken for scale

TL;DR
Shine muscat auction. Bid in comment section. Ends on 8/20 at 10pm eastern time. Shipping cost will be added ($20). Starts at $0.01

Hope everyone is having a great year, and if you are a student like me, I wish you the best of luck this year!

Hello everyone,
it's kinda been a while since I've posted what's going on with my collection.
I'll just kinda go over what's fruiting and flowering and do a quick graftatree update.

First off, with graftatree,
I apologize. Last couple months the business was up, stuff did not go well. I can't comment more on this, but it can easily be described with this quote from Pineislander, another forum member who I appreciate taking the time to show me around Pine Island this summer, "No one can take care of your plants [seeds, and scions] as good as yourself".

You can reach out to me through several ways and expect a response within a day or so. No hassle or wait.

Right now, the website is down. I am updating it to show people what I do, and have pictures of my greenhouse etc. so it can be more educational rather than just a store. I will still sell stuff there in the future. More of a fun thing to do and share the love of growing tropical fruits instead of trying to sell seeds.

And now, for the fun part. What am I growing and fruiting in TN? Well let's see

We got some guavas coming in!
OK, I realize I'm overhyping it. Guavas are a really mid fruit in my opinion (maybe the seedless ones will change my mind). But my family likes it as it's such a fast grower and it makes a significant amount of fruit. Plus, my sister enjoys the fruits. I guess that's the best I can give back to her as she's endured numerous trips to FL  ;D ;D ;D I also have the psidium eugeniafolia fruiting also, but that is a PGA special! I'll update the PGA thread when they are ripe.

Next up is the sapodilla. Alano variety. I still haven't got around to getting the butterscotch. It's on my must have list.
The fruit is good enough for me to put in ground in the greenhouse. I'll take it.

Here's my cherilata flowering! I'm not much into annonas, but my passion for them got fired up after I realized that they can grow in my greenhouse if on the right rootstock (montana or glabra). If I see a annona for sale that I don't have and it's on either of those rootstocks, I will buy it ;D . I just was successful grafting white ilama to montana. And today I just did a poshte graft to montana also. Hoping for the best.

Did someone say mangoes? Or is it mangos? People seem to spell it both ways here...
NDM-4. Although all the early crop split, the tree got its act together and is holding on to a good amount. To me, NDM-4 is a mid variety (I like the honey part, but the floral part is where it's questionable), but the tree I have is so old in ground, it would not make sense digging it out. Maybe I'll topwork it in the future.

Here's Mallika. It's an older mango, but I think it competes with the S-tier citrus class like lemon zest and meringue. I guess the downside is picking it at the right time, but after practice, it's not too hard to tell. I will pick this one in a few days. It's arguable that picking this variety mature green is the way to go.

There's also a few other things fruiting or flowering, but I'm too lazy to document them all lol. Miracle fruit is doing its thing. Starfruit has a few flowers also.

Thank you all for reading this, and stay tuned for more updates in the future! Ideally I would like to post content like this in the blog section of graftatree, but right now it's a work in progress.
Best,
Ryan

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Looking for mango scions
« on: August 02, 2023, 01:54:53 AM »
Im top working my ndm-4 into something else.
While it’ll set the tree back, I think it will be good in the future.
I already have three gallon size trees I could plant in it’s place, but I don’t think it’s worth digging up a 6-8 year old tree since it could def be grafted and grow super fast.
So I’m looking for scions of the following around 2-3 each maybe 3 varieties. Or more.
Lemon zest
Lemon merengue
Coconut cream…it’s patented 😓😓😓😓so no
Pineapple pleasure
Sweet tart*
M-4*
Honey kiss
Orange sherbert…it seems like people are hyping this one up, but the ones I tried were mid? I think 🧐
*second preferences since I already have those trees.
Thank you so much.

If I could have my first choice it would be pineapple pleasure, lemon merengue, honey kiss.

Hello everyone, I owe the forum a trip write up especially after I didn’t do one after the FL trip earlier this summer. So here’s my write up of the visits to SoCal growers. This was super exciting and it was nice to put more faces on forum members and meet up with some friends.

First off, I was able to stop by Hapa Joes place (Hapa Joes nursery hapajoesnursery.com). He was nice enough to let me stop by and I had a blast! We’ve traded stuff before and talked but it was so nice to meet in person. Spent several hours looking at his epic collection and talking plants with him. He’s such a cool guy with lots of stories and information. Was able to get lots of taste reports on these new fruits coming out of Brazil that no one else has tasted in the US. Definitely helpful on what to collect and what to not collect. I can say he has some nice seedlings. Here’s a few pictures of some of the cool plants he has

Next, was able to make a stop at the Jungle Boy Nursery (Luiz). Another great resource for Jaboticabas. He was kind enough to show me around and I picked up some new releas Jaboticabas from him.

Next I made a quick stop at revivalroots place (Jeremy). Thanks for showing me around. You got a nice collection and I’m excited to see how the loquat I got from you does at my uncle’s place.

In addition to this, I was privileged to talk at the CRFG San Diego Chapter yesterday night. Thank you James (mysteryknight) for the opportunity to speak at the club! It was super cool getting to talk to others interested in growing tropical fruits. I talked about Jaboticabas and covered the different species, varieties, care, and propagation techniques. The link should be on YouTube so I’ll add that if you want to hear me talk lol. Hapa Joe also came and provided some examples of plinias I talked about along with some ultra rare stuff.
I was fortunate to meet Brian Laufer at the meeting, another cool collector and he has his own nursery too raindanceseeds.com. He brought some ubajay for everyone to try and I can say it’s a very interesting fruit. There’s a little bit of garlic undertones but it wasn’t so bad. I be ubajay juice wouldn’t be so bad mixed with lemons…maybe lemonade?

Here’s the link to the talk - https://youtu.be/T6q67KymoXg
Very informative for anyone interested in learning more about this amazing fruit!

There are so many other places I wanted to stop by, but the traffic is so bad. It took me a whole day just to visit 3 people. Maybe one day I’ll have to plan a trip out here again for fruits.

I guess going along the theme of rare fruits, I was able to try saguaro cactus fruit. This is super rare and probably no one here has tried it…maybe hammer254 has tried it? These only grow in Arizona for the most part.

Also, I feel like I owe an apology to the forum about graftatree.com. I’ve been on vacation so the orders took longer to process and go out. But when I get back the website will get a rework and I’ll be selling some trees and seeds. I’ll try to post on the blog at least once a week and not have the website so focused on selling stuff, I’ll still sell stuff, but I want it to be informative and show people what I do. A lot of people at the meeting wanted to see my greenhouse and I assume many of you would love to see it also.

I’ll add pictures when I get a chance. Thanks for reading!
