Been fighting Anthracnose for two years with no fruit production on a seven year old Valencia Pride that used to produce good in South Florida (Key Largo). I've cut it all out several times and endlessly spray copper fungacide. Every few weeks it pops up again. Was told by a green thumb in neighborhood that I am fighting a losing battle and shoukd kill it and plant another tree because once it gets infected, it's a death sentence.
What do you guys think? If I do kill it can I replant in same area? My space for full sun is limited.

Have a 7 year old Valencia Pride that stopped producing the last two years. Last year I noticed black spot fungus all over the leaves. I treated it with Copper and thought that would do it. Ok...this year it was still full of it and I read online I should have cut it out and also used Copper. So...I did. This year during bloom season (mine wasn't blooming). Cut about 50% of the tree back, everywhere I could see fungus. My problem is it keeps coming back and I keep cutting out. I keep spraying every month.
Should I just cut it back to the stump and let it grow again? Any suggestions?
Here are a couple pics.
Thanks

I am in South Florida. I had a fungus last season so I sprayed it with Copper. I only did it once, thinking that was enough. Anyway, this season my leaves still look like fungus but my tree put out new growth over the fall and winter. I also noticed I am not blooming and I should be. It's a 7 year old good producing tree. Sooo....I sprayed it again with Copper. Then I was told from a local that I need to keep repeating it once a week until it is cured. I have sprayed it twice so far. Black is still on the leaves and still no blooms.
My question is...how do I know when I should stop spraying the Copper and the tree is cured? Will the black disappear from the existing leaves? Also...should I forget about a bloom this year? Is the damage done for this season?
Thanks

I am in South Florida. Looks like my Velncia Pride not blooming again. Didnt bloom last year. Before that it produced good. Any help from you guys? All the Mangos in neighborhood are blooming. Also...my 4 year old pickering is blooming but not my 4 year Carrie...which looks light green to me.
Little info... both of the VP and Carrie got a black fungus in fall of 2021 and I treated with copper.
Anyway first pic is of VP. Second pick is of Carrie and Pickering side by side.
Thanks

I have a couple small Mango trees (Kent and ValCarrie) that came in a 7 Gal pot. I planted them in a shady area surrounded by bigger trees I am not allowed to cut down because I ran out of room. They are staying alive and are green but are not putting out new growth after almost a year.
Anything I can feed them to make up for low sunlight area?

Just wondering if this looks normal or should I be concerned? Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help me pick which Mango tree to buy?
« on: June 28, 2021, 10:15:16 AM »
I live in the Florida Keys. Getting ready to buy another Mango tree. I already have a Valencia Pride that fruits well and I love. I also have young Pickering, Carrie and Kent. I had a Glenn that just caught a disease and died. It died young before it produced.

The sweeter the better. I was going to buy an Alphonso but the grower said they don't produce well in my area. Soo.....help me decide.  Should I get another Valencia (which I love) or another Glenn (which I hear good things about but don't know)?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangos with critter bites. Cut around?
« on: June 19, 2021, 08:13:03 PM »
Do you guys simply cut around a squirrel bite from a mango if there is plenty of untouched meat left? I have been. Will I die a slow and horrible death  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Do you prune young Mango trees?
« on: June 10, 2021, 05:05:12 PM »
Do you prune Mango trees before they have fruited? If so...how to prune them? Hollow out the inside like you would a more older tree? Thanks

I just ordered some growth hormone for my Mulberry cuttings and it said that almost any soft wood fruit tree can be propagated from a cutting. Has anyone done this with good results?
Thanks

I have a Valencia Pride, Pickering, Glenn and Carrie right now. I would like a late season bloomer. It would have to be disease resistant and hearty because I live in the Keys and it's rocky soil. What do you suggest?
Thanks

Hey guys...
I have a wooded lot in South Florida where the soil is basically coral and drains very well. I already have 4 Mango trees but I want a couple more. The problem is much of the remaining lot is wooded. There are some spots that get sunlight but it's filtered.
How much sun is needed for a healthy tree? Are some types more prone to needing less sun?
Thanks

Reading different guides to pruning, most seem to agree that you keep the tree hollowed out in center. Basically...a hole in the top. They also keep it under 15 ft tall.
Asking because i see some very dense, full trees in my neighborhood that look beautiful but I don't see a lot of fruiting going on. They have fruit but not as much as I would have expected from such healthy looking trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I think I killed my Mango Tree...
« on: March 22, 2021, 11:38:29 AM »
EDIT: I meant MANGO :)

I live in South Florida. I planted a Glenn Mango tree last year from a 7 gal pot. It has been living but not thriving like my others. Just kind of sits there dormant.
Anyway...I decided to move it to an area that got more sun. The original area was in shade for most of the day. I dug it up and moved it. I scattered a handful of Vigoro fertilizer on it and watered it every day for about a week. Now the leaves are all dying and falling off. Looks like it's about dead.
Did I do anything wrong? Bad time of year to move these?
Thanks

I seem to have a bunch of mangos on each blossom. They grow a little bit and then a good many drop off. Some even drop off after reaching about a inch and half long. Is this normal? Is there something I can do to make the little ones hang on?
BTW...I have a 4-5 year old Valencia Pride in South Florida. Second year the tree has produced.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Letting young Mango trees bear fruit?
« on: February 22, 2021, 01:57:12 PM »
I planted 3 young Mango trees last year in the summer and fall. They are flowering now and looks like they will bear fruit. For some reason I thought I heard that it wasn't healthy to let a young tree to bear fruit but I might be mistaken. Should I let the fruiting continue or does it do long term damage to the tree?
Thanks

This is from a year old Glenn mango tree. About 20% of the leaves look like this. What do you guys think.
FYI...I'm in the Florida Keys.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Multi-type Mangoes on one tree?
« on: September 26, 2020, 06:24:45 PM »
I have a friend who bought a Citrus tree that had five different grafts. Can you do this with a Mango tree and does anyone sell these? If not...why? Thanks

I have a three year old Valencia Pride that I keep pruned to 15ft tall and very round. The base of the tree splits to a "V" shape. It is definitely a different tree...the bark and leaves are different. But it is a fast grower like the VP. My rootstock has now grown very big and takes up about a fourth of the tree.
Anyway the VP just started fruiting last year. I received a dozen beautiful fruit even though I had a hundred buds that didn't make it. I assume it was because it was very young. No fruit survived on the rootstock but I believe it did flower.
My question is.....should I cut the rootstock trunk out? I hate to do it if there is a good chance it will produce quality fruit and I am inclined to let it go for another year and simply see what fruit the rootstock produces. OTOH, I don't want it sucking energy from the VP.
What do you guys think?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical cherry fruit?

Is there a cherry tree that grows well in the Keys? I heard about one but don't know if it is true?
Thanks

I went out fishing today with a guy who told me that Citrus has been decimated in Florida and that's why I haven't had luck growing them. He also said that UF just introduced a Citrus plant that is disease resistant and should grow fine here. I don't remember the name but he said it was a type of Mandarin orange. Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this Mango tree "V" trunk OK?
« on: September 02, 2020, 09:37:00 AM »
My three year old VP Mango tree seems to have two trunks. Is this normal. My main concern is if one trunk is the root stock and will not produce VP Mangoes. FYI....last year was the first year it bloomed. It had little mangoes all over it but most dropped off. I only got aboy a dozen and they were all on the lower left side of the tree.
Thanks

I live in the Florida Keys and I see where one of our largest South Florida Nurseries (Pine Island) stopped selling young Keitt trees because of disease problems. Should I be worried about planting one? I am looking for a late season bloomer.
Thanks

Hey Guys,
My Meyer Lemon tree is going bye bye and I am thinking about replacing it with a Mango tree. I only have about 15ft of diameter to play with. Anyone have a good suggestion that is available at nurseries in South Florida? Would like a late bloomer.
FYI...I already have a Velencia Pride, Carrie and a Glenn. Maybe a Keitt that I can keep pruned?
Thanks
