Persimmon Air layer?
« on: April 29, 2013, 08:14:20 PM »
Has anyone had success trying to air layer Japanese persimmon? I see in Claude Sweet's CRFG propagation chart that it says it's a no go. But wondering if anyone actually ever tried it?

Oscar, I have not tried it.   I have successfully grafted asian persimmon in the spring using cleft graft onto american persimmon rootstock.   But air layer seems like it is definitely worth a try.  Keep us posted if you try it.

That chart may not be exact or up to date. Example, for guava, it says root cutting is a no go but on purdue.edu, this is what they say: "... In Hawaii, India and elsewhere, the tree has been grown from root cuttings..."

A buddy and I tried airlayering persimmon last year.  It failed horribly when the cambium grew back at full force.  A huge callus grew back from where the bark was removed.

We tried again this year but need to go back and check on progress soon.

In (Homestead, Florida), guava is also being propagated by root cuttings in some nurseries.

I have also propagated guava from root cuttings.
