:) Nice finds Samu! Enjoy!

Right you are. It will help greatly to see it in person. Good luck Mike!

Yes, that is right! Most have a reddish new growth, but the shade of red varies a bit.

Jamun and wax Jambu are similar with the bronzey red, while Malay apples have a deep maroon red. Sorry, I should have been more clear. A friend recalled that lipote (liputeh?) had a much darker purple new growth.

I hope that helps. New growth color is just one characteristic that may shed some light on the ID, and alone can't clinch it. Hopefully along with leaf veining, branching, fruit characteristics etc. it may help Mike get closer to the correct ID. Syzygiums vary so much; it can be anything!  :)

I agree with Micah, it sure does look like Syzygium polycephalum.  It's also called lipote.
It is a little known black berry-like fruit when ripe, but I agree it is more of a sweet/sour taste (fully ripe fruit may no longer be astringent and is sweeter). Some wild selections are better than others and really sweet. It may be like Jambu/java plum (syzygium cumini) that also has a smaller rounder variety which is most often sour, but the larger, longer varieties do have some selections that are really good and sweet.

Lipote fruit grows in very tight clusters, close to the trunk. One clue that might help identify the seedling is the new growth. New growth of lipote is a dark purple/red.

No problem Flyingfoxfruits..:)

There's no hurry; whenever you get a chance is fine.

Ahh that explains it. It really has pushed out nicely.

here is the updated photo of the legendary Annona 'Negro'...big enough to set a fruit, just barely.

just defoliated partially to encourage some more blooms.

I'm really pleased with the sugar apple rootstock I used.

I see a few more blooms on the way, so there is still a chance for fruit set this season!

She's a beauty!! It's growing very nice. It has a very bushy nature!

I like how all the branches are coming out very close to each other. Did you trim it to get it to branch out like that? I don't think I've seen any sugar apple do that!

Thanks for sharing the pics..:) Can't wait till you fruit it! Good luck!

Saramuyo is sugar apple, and I believe "morado" is the color 'purple' in spanish...referencing the skin color...

Wow.  And I thought I was having a bad day when I was building my greenhouse, got my hair caught in the power drill and the force of the drill slamming into my face broke my cheekbone!

Carolyn

Ahh Carolyn, that must have hurt? Yes, you have to be very careful with hair and any moving parts. I'm glad you are ok.

I love reading your write-ups about your annual trips to PR.  8) As always, love the photos and it's so inspiring!! :)

Any idea if anyone is taking care of Felipe's trees or are the trees just left to their own devices? As great as it was to see all those durians scattered around under the tree, (wow!!), at the same time I was sad to see them just rotting away!! It really emphasized the fact that the owner was gone.

Ahh!!! That's crazy they shipped an empty pvc pipe, and no one stopped to think that this can't be right!!!

I'm excited about the grafted Pulasan. I hope it makes it!! Please keep us posted! Good luck! How are your maprangs doing?

Thank you for always taking the time out to share your trips... :)

Mangaba, maybe you have a male tree?!  In some of the papers, some researchers have described the Garcinia indica as a dioecious tree, with male and female flowers on seperate trees. Some papers also say there are some with bisexual flowers.

If your kokum is a male tree, one solution maybe to plant other trees hoping for female or bisexual trees. Hopefully one of your seedlings may turn out to be a female! Another solution, if you can source some scions from a female tree, is grafting them onto your tree to ensure fruit production.

Looking good bahayKubo... 8) How old is your tree?

May I be the first to welcome you to the forum..:) Keep posting!! :)

Very nice Chandramohan... 8) Congratulations!
I'm also interested to know your taste report. Is it really sweet?

I couldn't see any webs in the picture, so I'm not sure about infestation.
I agree with Anisha. It looks like it is in shock, and dehydrated. Increase the humidity and I'd also keep it in shade. Was the plant shipped to you or did you repot it?

Also, do you know if the top paler leaves just emerged recently? If they are new leaves, it's normal for them to look a little droopy and pale in color. New leaves come out a creamish-yellow color before they slowly harden off and gradually turn that dark green color. The leaf at the bottom looks healthy green.

Nice harvest... 8)
Are those Alano sapodillas?

Wow Miguel, Thank you for sharing the Video.  8)

The tree is really beautiful, and it is magical to look into the canopy and see the fruit at various stages of ripening. Your greenhouse looks like a tropical paradise! Thanks for sharing this one...:)
