Odd hybrid approach graft technique ( video ).
« on: December 21, 2015, 02:09:05 AM »
Came across this video,  I have not seen approach grafts done like this before,   where the root stock bottom part is grafted to the donor plant.  another shot shows multiple roots being grafted to a big branch.    would be similar to air layering but with multiple root stocks.  unlike air layering I would think these would have excellent root systems once established.

That was awesome and inspired.
A triple-rootstock inarch-marcot.  He has reached the level of a kung-fu grafter!

thanks for the video.
Does anyone know why they girdle the branch?
I don't remember this being done with air-layering.

I would assume they girdle the branch to inhibit photosynthates from being dispersed back to the roots and other parts of the tree. I believe having the energy stay in that localized grafted area will allow the callous to form and heal faster. That's ingenious!

T-dude, thanks for posting all though I couldn't understand the commits it was very interesting more or less they are approach grafting seedlings to I would guess, a known cultivar then air layering the root of seedling plus branch of original cultivar branch! Quite bazaar I'd say! :o :P 8)
