MANGO recommendation
« on: April 15, 2021, 04:32:29 PM »
Hello

I need your recommendations. If you were to plant 3 mangos, what would they be? 3 tasty, complex flavored mangos with different flavor profiles. Maybe one with coconut, one with lemon, and one with another complex flavor.

Thanks

Pickering - Early
Sugar loaf - Mid

Now good luck finding them trees.

Hi John

Do these varieties fruit in different times?

Sorry about the facetious silliness. I just came off a 12 hour shift and was feeling a little salty. I was hoping Rob would take me to the Woodshed and give me a Cool Hand Luke fine tuning.

Now that I've had a full night's sleep in the right frame of mind my answer is Dwarf Hawaiian Orange Sherbet Zill indo-chinese and Cotton Candy.

I should never be in charge of keeping the tally.Lol :)

John 51 the Pina Colada that I had were a little 2k row syrupy for me maybe not at their Peak flavor. I am really more interested in trying Sugarloaf. Everyone Raves about it and it seems like it may pass the test of time. My tree bloomed really well here and 9B
So far it has been a very clean tree. Waiting to see how anthracnose resistant it will be this summer.

Hardail has been wearing his durag into the 7-Eleven.
He's waiting on your mango shine recipe.Lol

Payari
Dusheri

If you planted Pickering, it would be early.  The other two are not late.  A late mango might be Honey Kiss or Neelam so that makes 4 trees.  I don't think it's possible to cover entire season AND flavor spectrum with only three varieties.  The good news: HK or Neelam adds a different flavor profile.

Just for Bovine, I would go with Sophie Frey, Wally and Tommy Atkins.

Ok, in all seriousness,  just on taste alone (which we all know is subjective), I would go with Pineapple Pleasure, Sweet Tart, E4, Phoenix and Peach Cobbler (I guess I cant count).  You could throw in Pina Colada as honorable mention.

Sugar Loaf is the best mango I ever tasted, tastes like pina colada. Yeah it is the bomb!

M4 never tasted, however... got a tree finally. It has received a great reputation, even from Har.

Pickering is just all around good, compact tree, great producer, decease free, taste a lil bit cococnuty - not much.

Does Pina Colada have more intense taste of pineapple coconut accompanied with tartness than Sugar Loaf? I like intense taste and complex flavors rather than sugar.  I wish I had the chance of trying them all...   :'(

I prefer coconut cream over Pina colada and it looks like E-4 is a better tree as far as production and anthracnose resistance.Time will tell but others may have more insight.

Is there any variety with similar fruits but better disease resistance to substitute PPK or Lemon zest?

You be crazy.  Coconut Cream is Hawaiian Tropic in a mango with a very poor shelf life.  Without focusing on any specific location, I would not say E4 is a better producer.  I have seen vary production issues from the coast to 10 miles plus inland.  I also feel as long as you have good airflow, anthracnose is not an issue.  I am in Western Wellington,  just East of Loxahatchee and I have no anthracnose issues on Pina Colada or E4 (I am blessed to have open airflow on my property).  I had a Coco Cream tree in West Boynton Beach,  just east of 441, and it got bad anthracnose but I had poor airflow.
