J-12 mango
« on: May 21, 2015, 07:41:37 PM »
I was fortunate to try the J-12 mango yesterday.  here has been some prior discussion about it here:
http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=9058.0

I shared it at the office and everyone was in agreement with it being excellent.  The first picture focuses on the lower part of the mango, which is more yellow than red.  The top is more red than yellow. The flesh seemed more orange in person than the pictures indicate. This mango is very sweet and very juicy. There is no fiber in the flesh.  The taste to me is not Julie like, except maybe in flavor intensity and so I am thinking that Super Julie may be another mango.  Fairchild  Ruby seems a more fitting name.  While this mango does have some complexity in flavor, it seems much less piney twang than a mango you might want to call Super Julie should have.

How would it rank against the top contenders (eg, dot, sweet tart, lz, etc)?

That looks overripe was it refrigerated or is it just the picture?

I just checked my list that Gary put together,  J-12 is Fairchild Ruby.  I ate one lastvyear and it was very good.  Not with the likes of Taralay,  Sweet Tart,  Fruit Punch,  Coc, E-4, O-2, Honey Kiss  but its was not far behind.  The vivid color was a plus ifb that means something to you.

Might have been a tad overripe.  And yes, it had been refrigerated.

Tough to give a conclusive answer here based upon the first tasting of a couple of fruits with one probably being just beyond peak of ripeness.  I would say that this mango has the potential of competing with the best on a respectable mango tasting table.  Might be just a hair below the best of the best, but on a given day it might take the best on table blue ribbon.

Jeff, this fruit came from one of the trees you grafted a few years ago.

I really like the J12.  The fruit are gorgeous wth deep red shoulders and deep yellow nose.  The flesh is also a deep orange color not well represented in photos.

The flavor itself is reminiscent of the Julie/Carrie line, at least to my pallet.  It is strongly flavored, very sweet, and has a sort of citrussey profile in a way.

I have not eaten enough of them to determine how it ranks vs the "greats", but for my taste it is right there knocking at the door.

The tree growth and size, precocity, disease resistance, etc, are all excellent.

OK This is good news. I still have an oversized 7 gallon from that batch I grafted that I've been trying to locate a spot for.

I thought it was.  Often called SUper Julie, I have seen posts about it and scions offered for sale on the forum.

And also can I purchase a few seeds if you guys have fruit I'm happy to pay for seeds and postage or trade you for something I have.

Just want to add that J12 has been very reliable in production, at least in my yard.  Also tastes good when over ripe - not as complex as when picked early, but still good with a more syrupy sweet profile.

If you dont mind please snap a pic with your phone of the tree.

Here’s a pic of my tree and I found a second bloom starting this past Friday 4/30/21. Super Julie is one of my fav, easy to manage tree, beautiful and tasty fruit, resinous, some occasional strings in flesh, heavy bloomer.

I might be able to part with some seeds, I have been planting them since last year and keeping them in pots that I’m going to move to an eventual acreage to fruit out. One seedling in particular has this unique sheen to the leaves which is pretty unique vs other 80+ seedlings of Zill mangos I’m growing, it’s oily looking will post it later.

thanks Joe, yes I am interested in a 5 or 6 seeds if possible but whatever you can spare would be much appreciated.  i can send you money or fruit or whatever you want in exchange.  This particular type of mango seed seems to grow especially well here so I want to plant a few more of them.
