I shall probably select by forced freezing of -8C at the 15 cm stem stage, like I do for the rest of my hybrids.

Sorry for the mistake.
Valentine contains only the gene of anthocyanine pigmentation coming from Ruby orange ancestor.
The other type of pigmentation due to the presence of lycopene is absent.

Mikkel,
As far as I know it is Clemenrubi

Is it completely seedless?

If its flower buds are formed in the autumn and  protected by scales like those of poncirus it could nevertheless flower in the spring.

Ilya,
are Dunstan friuts better than 5 Star-fruits? And do you know #82 from Eisenhut aswell?

Best Regards
Robert

Robert,
I have 82, but it has not flowered yet.
I am able to compare 5star and Dunstan because I have both of them on own roots growing close together. 5star was also harvested  last week but some of its fruits still had some green specks.

Fruit smells good but different from that of Dunstan. The proportion of juice is also less and you need more pressure  to extract it.

It is more sour, less bitter with 12°Brix. No poncirus aftertaste at this stage.
In the past I noticed that fruits of 5star can be kept for several months in the basement at ~12C and improuve their quality without drying. At the end of March there is almost no bitterness.
Fruits of Dunstan are drying more rapidly and start to rot by the Christmas time. I also noticed that 5star juice bitter taste is due to the presence of small pieces of  membranes, it can be totally eliminated by keeping  in refrigerator for  a few days. These pieces form a bitter bottom layer.

Till,
Here are my impressions as of today. I harvested this fruit one week ago when it was fully colored and easily detached from the branch.

Outside it has a pleasant fruity smell with no poncirus overtones.

Very juicy, bitterness is on the level of that of grapefruit, 10° Brix, acidity on the pair with lemon, some astringency but no inside oils, orange like scent, no poncirus aftertaste.
I do not know if your fruit was fully colored, from my experience the taste of poncirus hybrids greatly depends on the degree of ripeness.

Florian,
My Dunstan fruits are very big.

Congratulation Ilya, wonderful pictures.
How do you rank the frosthardiness of Changsha ?
Did the fruit size and flesh amount of your crosses Ichangstar, ...
improve with the years ?
Regards Frank
Hello Frank,
I do not know for a long term, this plant has been in ground only for 4 years, no damage  yet, but lows were only -9.5 one winter.
I am a little bit disappointed by its rather late maturing, but may be it is because the tree is rather young.

An impressive harvest. How does sunki×pt taste? Have you estimated the percentage of its seeds' nucelarity?

It is awfully bitter.

Its sibling Ichangstar70 is the earliest

Great looking fruit, Illya. You're getting good results from your breeding efforts. Do you have an approximate count on the number of Citrus plants you have in total?
Thank you, I estimate around 300 hybrid seedlings at dense planting in this garden and probably around 400 in the South of France.

Today night we got the first  ground frost, so I want to share some pictures showing the degree of ripiness.
All trees are in ground never protected.

Ichangstar60 have already dropped most of its fruits

No, citrus fruits are not climacteric, they do not depend on the presence of ethylene for maturation.

Excellent pictures, Ilya. That is exactly what a hybrid ichangensis x sinensis should look like in my opinion. I am also convinced that the commonly available ichangensis x sinensis is just an orange.

How coldhardy is the Voss plant?
Florian, the plant has experienced only three winters, the lowest night temperature was -9.5C.
Not a slightest damage was observed.

There is an somatic hybrid (fusion of protoplasts) of Ichangensis X sinsensis and a normal cross IxS. The somatic hybrid resembles oranges very much.
Robert, I have some doubt that somatic hybrid described in 1993 Chinese paper is a variety available in Europe.
There are so many barriers for such a distribution.
My plant show no signs  of tetraploidy, its leaves have the same appearance as of common oranges, cold resistance is up to -9C for the short night freeze and the  taste is 100% orange.

Three years ago Bernhardt Voss kindly sent me the budwood of this hybrid.
I grafted it  to PT root. It does look very different from another variety that has a similar  name  and is rather widely accessible in Europe. I  have it and by my opinion it is a pure early orange.

This year Bernhardt hybrid flowered for the first time, fruits were almost ripe in the beginning of  November.

Fruits have orange-like fragrance , juice is abundant, not bitter, acid like that of lemon, 10° Brix.

Albedo is astringent, slightly bitter

Many seeds covered by pectin.

They are just germinating.
PT-plus when fully ripe (can be detached easily) does not have internal oils and poncirus aftertaste.

Millet,
The seeds are germinated in zip locked packets in slightly moist  perlite at 30C. After root appearence they are transfered on the surface of substrate in covered pots.

Great, Ilya!
I see everyone wanted to do the same 😊 I also got myself Valentino a couple of years ago, but it's still far from flowering. I believe Valentino gives zygotic seeds. I wonder why the reverse crossing failed? A large style? ;D
PT-plus cross also  was early failed ;)
It seems to me that generally crosses with poncirus are not easy to perform.
Valentine is abundantly flowering, but fruit set is quite limited, most fruitlets drop rapidly.

Now that's an interesting cross.

I assume the motivation here for the larger, juicier fruit + red coloration. Pigmented pomelo is used rather than a blood orange because of better results from poncirus hybrids with pomelo rather than orange, yes?
Valentine is a very special variety with genes for two types of internal pigmentation and a gene for acidless feature.
At least in the case of combination with other cultivars of citrus it is able to diminish the acidity even when present in one copy.
I hope that this will be also a case in  poncirus hybrids.

Probably succeeded to have it.
It was done with castrated  PTP flowers pollinated by Valentine pummelo. I tried also another way, but failed.
This year was supposed to be the last to try any cross with PTP, previously the seedlings although different in vigor were rather uniform in the shape of leaves and overall look alike.
Now only one third of them (I am germinating 85 seeds) look like those of poncirus, the rest are clearly different.

Putative nucellar seedling to the right. Red arrows point to the tiny unfoliate alternate first leaves typical for pure poncirus seedlings.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Seed development after picking

I have done this several time and found that seed maturation exist, but the fruit should reach a certain phase at the moment of harvest.  It is better to pick it when yellow color starts to appear.

Yes, but I guess the shape could be affected by juice content. Fingerlime vesicles are also much harder.
