Valentine contains only the gene of anthocyanine pigmentation coming from Ruby orange ancestor.
The other type of pigmentation due to the presence of lycopene is absent.

Is it completely seedless?

are Dunstan friuts better than 5 Star-fruits? And do you know #82 from Eisenhut aswell?

I have 82, but it has not flowered yet.
I am able to compare 5star and Dunstan because I have both of them on own roots growing close together. 5star was also harvested  last week but some of its fruits still had some green specks.





Fruit smells good but different from that of Dunstan. The proportion of juice is also less and you need more pressure  to extract it.


It is more sour, less bitter with 12°Brix. No poncirus aftertaste at this stage.
In the past I noticed that fruits of 5star can be kept for several months in the basement at ~12C and improuve their quality without drying. At the end of March there is almost no bitterness.
Fruits of Dunstan are drying more rapidly and start to rot by the Christmas time. I also noticed that 5star juice bitter taste is due to the presence of small pieces of  membranes, it can be totally eliminated by keeping  in refrigerator for  a few days. These pieces form a bitter bottom layer.

An impressive harvest. How does sunki×pt taste? Have you estimated the percentage of its seeds' nucelarity?

Great looking fruit, Illya. You're getting good results from your breeding efforts. Do you have an approximate count on the number of Citrus plants you have in total?

Thank you, I estimate around 300 hybrid seedlings at dense planting in this garden and probably around 400 in the South of France.

No, citrus fruits are not climacteric, they do not depend on the presence of ethylene for maturation.

There is an somatic hybrid (fusion of protoplasts) of Ichangensis X sinsensis and a normal cross IxS. The somatic hybrid resembles oranges very much.

Robert, I have some doubt that somatic hybrid described in 1993 Chinese paper is a variety available in Europe.
There are so many barriers for such a distribution.
My plant show no signs  of tetraploidy, its leaves have the same appearance as of common oranges, cold resistance is up to -9C for the short night freeze and the  taste is 100% orange.

The seeds are germinated in zip locked packets in slightly moist  perlite at 30C. After root appearence they are transfered on the surface of substrate in covered pots.

I assume the motivation here for the larger, juicier fruit + red coloration. Pigmented pomelo is used rather than a blood orange because of better results from poncirus hybrids with pomelo rather than orange, yes?

Valentine is a very special variety with genes for two types of internal pigmentation and a gene for acidless feature.
At least in the case of combination with other cultivars of citrus it is able to diminish the acidity even when present in one copy.
I hope that this will be also a case in  poncirus hybrids.

I have done this several time and found that seed maturation exist, but the fruit should reach a certain phase at the moment of harvest.  It is better to pick it when yellow color starts to appear.
