When I've ordered previously, the UCR (CCPP) budwood prices were $0.75 per bud. And although it is still listed as this on one website, when I try to place an order, on their revamped order form site, the price is $1.50 per bud. Which makes it too high for me given my low percentage of takes when bud grafting.
Could someone confirm this new price level? I've tried emailing them twice but no one is answering.

I cannot confirm the price, but I know how you feel on the buds. Some of mine were pushing, then the plant rejected them. On others, I thought they failed, but they are just now starting to push, when other UCR buds flushed ages ago.
I hope you can continue practicing grafting throughout the year and your success increases. I found that by pruning trouble (crossing) branches, and budding them elsewhere on the tree, I got some good practice in that led to more takes this year.
And sometimes the tree culls a graft, part of the experience.

That's what I was thinking of doing. I wonder if I can take a bud directly off a branch without cutting the branch off. Would this harm the branch or will it eventually callous over and heal.

Prices for budwood are not as adveftisedon tbe ccpp site. I paid 2.50 per bud this spring. They did not have an outstanding available selection either.

Its cheaper for CA residence ($ 1.50).

CCPP budwood in Colorado is $2.50 per bud.

It's pricey for out-of-state orders. I believe that the minimum is 12 buds per variety vs. 6 in-state. On the plus side, you seem to always get more buds than you order. I ordered one budstick of a bunch of varieties and got two for all of them. The email I use is for Rock Christiano, which is firstname.lastname@ucr.edu and he does reply.
