Things to plant along fence South Florida 10B
« on: April 04, 2015, 08:30:22 PM »
Thinking of taking advantage of a completly empty fenceline.  Something I can plant less than a foot from fence, and espalier or train to grow (vine) along my fence. It is full sun but pretty sure after a couple of years will be partial to filtered sunlight from growing mango trees.  Any suggestions??? Have thought muscadines, but don't really love em., thought of bending my mulberry too trying to make it grow espalier of sorts along fence as it is long whippy main stem now about 8 ft long. Can build put some cross 1x2 from support beam to support beam like built in trellis, figs? passion fruit?

kiwi doesn't fruit well here.

I would say eugenias--you can keep them pretty small so they'd work along a fenceline.  As for espalier, I would say annonas work pretty well, but you can pretty much espalier anything, if done right.

Gac fruit? really?  :D

I am also experimenting with an espaliered sabara jabo, but not on a wire, just pruned in a flat plane.  We'll see how it works out.

If I lived in your zone I would try Sweet Granadilla.  Never tried one but heard they are yummy.  Edulis flowers are amazing too.

Imagine a tree that could push growth like that!  I would be scared to plant it in my yard :)

What type of fence is it?

Passion fruit (dont bother with the sweet one)
Bananas
Jeff mentioned Eugenia. ..you tasted a Zill Dark Surinam  and didnt like it.  There are others but from whst i have seen of your likes and dislikes, i would pass on Eugenia if i were you
Ascerola/Barbados Cherry  (with creative pruning)...though might have same issues as Eugenia. ..you should taste first
Black pepper

The list is endless if you consider things like lemon grass, hot peppers, herbs, etc.

You could try and espalier many things such as star fruit, persimmon, annonas...

Its a 6ft shadow box fence. Posts are about 6 ft apart. Yeah surinams blah lol  Maybe I will transplant my annonas there and semi espalier them.  Bullie, when are passion fruits available to public at Excalibur? Sounds interesting, and believe it or not have never had a passion fruit lol.   A trip up there is coming soon.

Tari's bunch grape AKA Tari burgundy grapes

Benders Grove has it when Pine Island has some grafted. Comes in 3 gallon. I see few leaves on my muscadine vines but Tari has lots of leaves and tiny grape bunches showing.

Tari is a muscadine x vinifera cross. Mr Bender spoke highly of it when I bought mine. He said everyone at Pine Island nursery liked them

Tari Grape
Product Information

I am excited to be part of the reintroduction of this variety.

Tari's Burgundy is part muscadine and part bunch grape, hybridized in the early 80's, characterized by disease resistantance and superior flavor. This grape can be used as a fine table grape, for winemaking or for jelly. I understand it has won wine awards, but have no evidence to support this claim.  The grapes are burgundy in color, 1/2"-5/8" in size and produce 30-45 grapes in bunches. I will furnish complete growing instructions with purchase. Available for a limited time this spring, possibly again for the fall. You may order up to five of this variety at this time. Thank you to Sharon Adams for all her efforts to resurrect this jewel. Feel free to email us about current availablity.

Price: $14.95

I know you have them too. Another winner from Benders Grove.     And my muscadines are still 98%dormant and it is getting late. I think they will push out leaves and grapes but the grapes will be quite late which is fine by me

What is your reasoning for not bothering with the sweet one?  I will be popping some seeds shortly to give it a go.  Thanks.

Depending on the type, they will not all fruit here.  I have recently tasted some that were fruited here and i was very unimpressed.  The edulis has much better fkavor and is far more versatile in my opinion.  Plus it will give you a lot of fruit.

I was wondering about the Pierce's too on the bunch grapes. Seems to me it would be worse down there than it is here.

My Muscadines have leaves and are growing but not at the rate of a bunch grape. I have some kind of bunch grape(I know it will get peirce's at some point) but its on its third year in the ground so I do not expect any fruit this year.

I think bananas make a great border tree. The spread rapidly from year to year and 10b is a great zone for them. Plus I like bananas because I work out a lot so that's a plus in my book too.

Hmmm pepper is something I have contemplated, if you are a spice person, I think that would be the direction I would go.

passion fruit means a very high vine to fruit ratio and if you are unlucky that tangle will stay moist and rot your fence sooner
